Recreational facilities can raise funds for maintenance - Walwyn

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, in addressing the House of Assembly yesterday, May 10, 2012, stated that in an effort to take proper care of recreational facilities, money should be raised, that can then aid the government in repairs or new structuring.

Minister Walwyn was making his contribution to the “Recreation Trust Amendment Act, 2012” Bill which he had brought to the House and was later passed with amendments.

Hon. Walwyn stated that in order to maintain the facilities that government invested so much money into, it was his job to make sure the facilities are used in a wise way.

“The principle ordinance allows the trust to raise money,” said Walwyn.

The Minister for Education and Culture said from time to time there are opportunities where money can be collected due to specific uses of the facilities.

Walwyn gave an example of moving sport days to the weekend, whereas more people would be able to come and spectators can be charged with a small fee.

“It is opportunities like these we must use to augment the subvention so that we can take proper care of the facilities that we have.”

Minister Walwyn told the House that he is constantly approached by residents with complaints stating that facilities on the island are ‘running down’.

He stated that when seeing the conditions of some of the facilities in the Virgin Islands (VI) he was appalled.

“We shouldn’t do these things because of other people, we must do them because it is the right thing to do,” Walwyn said, noting that in order for the Government to maintain the facilities, monies should be raised by charging a very small price for events planned at the facilities.

Makes sense. I don't think people will mind paying $3.00 to watch our athletes. We pay to watch B'ball, sometimes even $10 so it makes sense. the problem isn't collecting money though, it's management and accountability.

why should we pay to see our kids have fun? maybe to ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities so that other kids in the future can have fun as well? it benefits everyone to have the facilities properly maintained and since there is no VAT or other taxes, it is not an unreasonable request.

Because it takes money to maintain the facilities on which our kids are having fun. We don't want to pay taxes, we don't want to pay for anything at all, but yet we expect that things should be kept in good shape/condition by government. If we don't contribute to the government's purse, how in god's name do we expect that there will always be funds for the building up and maintenance of of our country? We have to contribute and I do agree with the minister in this regards. Nothing good comes without a cost.

Dont mind the ignorance. These are the same people that are saying it will be too expensive to send their kids to school for an extra year with the proposed 6th form. These are selfish wicked people. These people even upset that Government not paying the full cost of text books and school bus. This is the mentality the VIP created and that's why the country is broke. they don't want to contribute but expect government to pay for everything. Things will have to get really bad in this place for people to learn a valuable lesson. nothing is free. every small business and contractor want to be paid upfront when working for government but nobody want to spend money. where will it come from, out of the sky? come on. Charging a minimal fee to enter the field or other facilities is a good thing. Look at other countries that have top notch facilities. you think you can just get up and use a stadium anywhere else for absoltuely free? bills have to be paid. same with hospital, people want good doctors proper service but want it free.

IF Fraser had said this the blogs on this site would go bonkers praising him. Fraser spoke about banking on another story and they bigging him up, if Myron said it they would find a reason to say he's talking crap. Grow up people this is our country. If you think those politicians are fighting eachother for 'real' you in for a big surprise.

Iron Lion, how the hell did Fraser get into this foolishness? You think Fraser would actually make such a deceptive proposal? Why the hell Myron didn't say this during the campaign? This just goes to show how little Myron knows about sporting activities in the VI. You have to beg people to come out to these activities. Every event in sports, track and field, everything they begging for sponsorship. Nobody is going to pay nothing. Tell the NDP to man up and fix the problems like they promised the people. And not try to do it on the backs of the poor.
