GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI – Second District Representative in the Virgin Islands House of Assembly (HoA) Hon Melvin M. Turnbull has called on the British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) to speedily resolve the power issues being faced by the people of Jost van Dyke.

The legislator in a statement yesterday, Friday, November 10, 2023, to the people of JvD said, “Since the middle of September of this year, you have been subjected to the uncertainties that come with being disconnected from the main electricity grid on Tortola since the damage of the subsea power cable that connects the island to this grid.”

He added that the circumstances have subjected persons to frequent power outages necessitated by the need to service the generator that has been placed on JvD as a stop-gap measure and instances where this generator has shut down for various reasons.

“It is no exaggeration when I say that the people of JvD have been hanging by a thread over the past couple of months. This is particularly concerning, especially because the months of December and early January are very busy months for the island, and reliable electricity would be a requirement for the businesses to thrive,” Hon Turnbull added.

BVIEC contacted on power woes

He said as a representative he has since communicated his displeasure to the BVIEC with the current situation faced by this sector of the 2nd District and has further requested that the power company take quick action to resolve this situation.

“The General Manager in responding to me has asked that I convey the deepest apologies of the BVIEC to the people of JvD for the inconveniences that the damage of the subsea cable has caused to the island, and to give their sincerest assurances that BVIEC has been doing their level best to maintain power in JvD,” he said.

Hon Turnbull further explained that the fault on the subsea cable that links JvD to Tortola has been located, and identified and a plan has been developed as to how it will be repaired pending the arrival of a major parts needed for the repair.

“This repair has been delayed for over a month thus far… Once this item arrives and is in the BVIEC’s possession, they will be able to repair the cable within 72 hours, after which the cable can be energized, and power sent to JvD from Tortola normally,” he said.

Hon Turnbull said he has indicated to the BVIEC General Manager, that he expects that the BVIEC will have normal power restored to JvD before the middle of December and that New Year’s Day will meet JvD connected back to the grid, with assurances given that the issues is of high priority.

Honorable Turnbull is giving the people of JVD the impression that he has the magic tool in his hand that he can flip at any time and solve their problems. It is the government resources that is being used and when he is finished, he is taking them to task. One thing I am cognizant of is that he that humble himself will be exalted. That does not mean that he should not look out for his constituents. When consumers are asked to pay their electricity bills on time so that the Corporation can obtain money to solve the problems, the same politician are criticizing the Corporation. In order to solve most of the problems in this country, the people must be prepared to make sacrifice and things will happen with God's help.
