Pythons continue where they left off as Softball returns!

LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI - Fast Pitch Softball returned to the Old Recreation Grounds for the first time since the completion of the 2012 season with the opening of the 2014 season, named in honor of Berth “Big Man” Henley, on Saturday March 29, 2014.

During his playing career Berth “Big Man” Henley distinguished himself as one of the top pitchers locally and regionally. He attained a run of success not enjoyed by many players, when he led his team (The Roots) to five (5) championships between 1987 and 1992.

There were three games played on Saturday and two on Sunday with a sizeable crowd welcoming back the game after its year long absence from the sports scene.

In the Women’s League opening game the Pythons were given a good run for their money before beating the Hawks, 12-7. The Pythons had 9 hits, 4 errors and left 5 runners on base, whilst the Hawks had 7 hits, 1 error and left 7 runners on base.

The winning pitcher was Valissa Braithwaite in relief of Thea Cooke who failed to get out of the first inning. The loser was Deanna Hunte. Ivy Fahie of Pythons went 2-3 with a double and 2 runs batted in and Valissa Braithwaite went 3-4 with 2 doubles and 3 runs batted in. Seven (7) Hawks players had 1 hit each.

In the Men’s game the Reds defeated Blue Wings 15-4, on 12 hits, 0 errors and 4 left runners on base. The Blue Wings had 8 hits, 4 errors and left 4 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Jason Fonseca who went all the way for Reds and the loser was Alvin Bolton who did not get out of the first inning. Sylvester Johnson of Reds went 1-3 with 3 runs batted in and Timothy Brewer and Kyle Lamotta each blasted a home run. Kye Rhymer of Blue Wings went 2-3 with a run batted in.

The last game of opening night was an exhibition game between The BVI Fryers and a team from the USVI, the visitors being victorious by a score of 13-4.

They had 12 hits, 0 errors and left 5 runners on base, whilst the Fryers had 5 hits, 4 errors and left 3 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Warren Brooks and the loser was Lionel Hodge. Kyle LaMotta of USVI went2-3 with 2 triples and 2 runs batted in and David Clarke went 2-2 with 3 runs batted in. George Burrows of Fryers went 2-2.

The first game on Sunday saw the West End Warriors defeat Elmore Stoutt High School Rams 20-8, with 7 hits, 2 errors and 7 runners left on base. The Rams had 6 hits, 5 errors and left 7 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Sarah Potter and the loser was Khalisha Stoutt. Gertrude Thomas of Warriors went 2-4 with 2 runs batted in and Sarah Potter went 2-2 with a run batted in. Mary Graciano of Rams went 2-4.

The second game saw the Pirates defeat Power Outage 2-1 in eight innings. The Pirates had 4 hits, 0 errors and left 11 runners on base and Power Outage had 2 hits, 3 errors and left 3 runners on base. The winning pitcher was Allen Smith and he struck out 12 batters. Neville Smith struck out 19 batters in a losing effort. Shamoi Dagou of Pirates went 2-4 with a run batted in.

Game 3 between Fryers and USVI was called in the second inning because of rain.

    team to beat none of them, good teams both of them...pirates and power outage still better than reds they beat up on blue wings relax
