ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Acting Director of the Public Works Department, Mr Jeremy W. Hodge has said that the Public Works Department (PWD) is engaged in heightened road maintenance activities in preparation for the hurricane season and to ensure continued public safety.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1, 2021, and will officially end on November 30, 2021.

Mr Hodge, according to a press release from Government Information Services (GIS) on June 4, 2021, said as the Territory works to develop its collective disaster readiness and security during this time of increased risk, the Public Works Department plans to ensure the soundness of the Territory’s infrastructure as best as possible.

“Prior to and as we officially enter the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, we continue to clear drains and ghuts throughout the Territory,” the Acting Director said, adding, “Road asphalt patching and some bush cutting will be more apparent as we continue to experience increased rain showers heading into the season; along with speed bump placements where safety is of concern.”

Speed bumps placed on request by District Reps- Hodge

Mr Hodge indicated that while most remedial road works are initiated by the Public Works Department, the placement of speed bumps are a collaborative effort, as they are only placed in communities throughout the Territory at the request of District Representatives on behalf of the community members in an effort to mitigate concerns for safety.

The public is asked to be mindful of the movement of heavy equipment along roadways from Virgin Gorda to Jost Van Dyke and be patient with workers as they carry out the necessary road works.

The Department of Public Works, according to GIS, remains committed to providing a safe, practical, efficient, economically and environmentally sound infrastructure that is well designed, constructed and maintained in accordance with recognised regional and international codes and standards and is in harmony with the Territory's social and economic goals.

PWD is compromised of a set of lazy ass guys. You see them on the road under a tree or on the truck chilling. The road repair works is mediocre and not done to last. Definitely needs expertise to supervise road works. PWD is a joke. They need some fire under their behinds to get out there and be productive. Seventy five percent of them don't earn their salaries. WSD and Solid Waste too.

The heading should read PWD sets off to waste some more time and resources. It is sad that I have to say this but from last year, I watched some so called projects get started and were left uncompleted. I clearly remember telling my partner several times that next year's '2021' Hurricane Season will come and go and those projects will still be ongoing. I spoke it and so it was. Now more than ever , every road you turn there is a so called lazy project going on. It is very annoying if you ask me. Holes etc are made and they are not fixed properly. Patch work is not good work. Having 8 men 3 to 6 feet away from each other picking up soil with spades is not work. Having men sit on the side of the road with hammer in hand and doing squat is not work.

And please stop working during rush hour times when people need both lanes to get to where they are going. Unless it is that the current happenings are intentional for some reason, revisit the way your department is managing road works. Currently PWD should be ashamed! Just read the comments.

    1. There is a drainage at the entrance of water and sewerage office, it is covered with the metal pipes, but it is completely filled with dirt. I am sure that outlet takes water from that area out to the sea, please ensure stuff like these are cleared periodically might eliminate much of this flooding we see.

    2. There needs to be some drainage put in that one way road next to the Noel Lloyd Park. When it rains that place is horrible with water accumulation. Should be against the law. People can't even use the sidewalk there when it rains. Please address.

    3. That pool that settles across from First Caribbean International Bank in that parking lot. How long will we have to look at that and be subject to that before drainage is addressed? Needs fixing ASAP.

    4. Overall visual needs to be conducted when it rains to ascertain where water is stagnant and how more drainage can be applied. A simple one hour rain should not have our capital looking like it rained for weeks. Come on...
