Pussers Manager granted $20K bail for choking wife
Stanley Powell Jnr, who is charged with common assault, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday January 16, 2012 where he pleaded not guilty. Against this backdrop, he was granted bail in the sum of $20,000 with one signed surety.
According to Crown Counsel Sarah Benjamin, Powell and his wife were married on December 10, 2011. However, on December 28, 2011, the defendant, who is a Manager at Pussers reportedly called his wife and informed her he was delayed at work, and then called back to notify her that he will be out with friends having drinks.
The court heard that the Virtual Complainant (VC) called two of her husband’s friends and requested that they do not keep him out too late. She also tried calling Powell several times and when he did answer his mobile, angrily told her he did not appreciate the VC calling his friends to check up on him.
At around 7 p.m., when the 33 year-old St. Maarten national arrived home and in an angry tone told his wife never to pull that stunt again, Crown Counsel Benjamin disclosed.
“He got more upset and pushed her on the bed, pinning her down with his hands. He placed his knee to the right side of her face....she began to struggle while he squeezed his knee against her face,” the Crown Counsel told the Court.
And as the VC continued struggling, Powell allegedly slapped her, and then allegedly began to choke her with his hands. He then allegedly released her and apologised for what happened.
It is also alleged that Powell hit and pushed his wife several times as she attempted to leave the bedroom, but he eventually left. According to Crown Counsel Benjamin, the VC claimed her arms were swollen and she felt pain to her right jaw.
On January 8, 2012 a report was made to the Police and five days later Powell arrested and officially charged with common assault. When interviewed by police, Powell allegedly said, “I never assaulted my wife. She is the one assaulted me.”
Crown Counsel Benjamin had also indicated to the court that the VC wanted Powell to stay away from her, which he said he had no problem with.
But Senior Magistrate Valerie Stephens urged Powell, if his wife is willing, to attend couple’s counselling. She added they were still newlyweds and something positive could come out of it.
The matter is set for report on March 1, 2012. Powell is represented by Mary Lou Creque.
