‘Pull me up’ if I ever get disrespectful in HoA- Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith
“We have to use our words more wisely. We have to be able to express ourselves more decently and we have to have respect for us as your colleagues,” Hon Hodge-Smith stated during the Continuation of the Nineteenth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
The House was at the time debating the motion brought by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) for the HoA to approve the borrowing of $100m from CIBC to mainly undertake infrastructural works across the territory.
Hon Walwyn called out for lacking decorum
During the debates, the Opposition, particularly Hon Walwyn used the opportunity to lambast the Wheatley Administration, including referring to it as “Eight Graders” and “Mumus”. Hon Walwyn had to also be cautioned by the Speaker regarding parliamentary language during his rant.
Hon Smith-Hodge said she listened to the words that were “spewing” from the Opposition and reached a point where she felt “so ashamed” listening to the “berating and being called 8th Grade government and the level of disrespect that I think is disrespect.”
The Junior Minister said she is often told it’s the politics; however, it's the part of the politics that she does not necessarily like.
“And I often ask my family, if I ever get to that point, please let me know, pull me up, because I don’t find it necessary, Madam Speaker, because I think we can say the things that we want to say but we don’t necessarily have to say it how we say it sometimes.”
Respect the voters- Hon Hodge-Smith
Hon Hodge-Smith reminded that all 13 legislators are in the “Honourable House” because they were voted in by the people, who used their democratic right to elect the people who they felt would be capable of running the territory.
Regarding, the loan from CIBC to be repaid over 18 years, Hon Hodge-Smith said it’s going to benefit the economy by providing job opportunities
“Madam Speaker, this loan is going to increase the quality of life of our people.”
According to Hon Wheatley’s motion, the $100m dollars is for the purpose of financing identified critical government infrastructural projects, including but not limited to recurrent and capital expenditures and refinancing ballon payments due in 2026 on existing loans, and paying transaction costs associated with arranging the facility.
The motion was successfully passed last evening, September 26, 2024.
