Public Works Department on alert for impending weather

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) says the Public Works Department (PWD) has mobilised its Emergency Response Team and is inspecting ghuts and other waterways in a proactive approach to the impending weather later today, February 6, 2024.

Honourable Rymer was responding to a weather alert issued by the Department of Disaster Management advising of a frontal trough, approaching the Territory. The department has advised that showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected with potential impacts of flash flooding, urban flooding and hazardous marine conditions for small crafts. 

Honourable Rymer said, “Our diligent response in the aftermath of thunderstorm Phillipe still shows our waterways in satisfactory condition and we are urging residents to take steps to protect themselves and their property.”

Director of the Public Works Department Mr Jeremy W. Hodge said a member of the Emergency Response Team has been assigned to each district. 

Mr Hodge said, “They are responsible for monitoring the performance of the waterways and making recommendations where needed in the event of excessive rains. We will also be out and about safely, to respond in the aftermath of this pending weather.”

Director Hodge added, “We cannot predict the exact impact of the weather system, but we must be prepared for the worst. Please contact us in the event of boulders or debris that pose hazardous at 468-9261 or 468-5906.”

The Ministry of Communications and Works remains dedicated to ensuring the continued development and maintenance of public infrastructure in keeping with international standards so that public utilities are reliable and affordable in support of an enhanced community life for every resident and visitor in the Virgin Islands.
