ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– The 2025 Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival is underway, and the Family and Juvenile Unit of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is urging the public to remain vigilant in safeguarding our youth, particularly from the dangers of underage drinking.

Child safeguarding means taking proactive steps to protect children from harm, both intentional and unintentional, including exposure to substances that could threaten their health and safety.

According to the RVIPF, in a press release today, August 1, 2025, it was during the 2024 Festival that a troubling number of minors were found consuming alcohol, with several requiring medical attention.

“Already for this year’s festivities, one such case has been reported. We cannot afford a repeat of this pattern,” the RVIPF stated.

Illegal to sell alcohol to U18 individuals

Under Chapter 106, Section 34 of the Liquor Licence Ordinance of the Virgin Islands, it is illegal for any business to sell alcoholic beverages to individuals under the age of 18. Additionally, Section 204(2)(c) of the Criminal Code (as amended in 2013) defines it as cruelty to children for any adult aged 18 or over to give, sell, or facilitate the sale of intoxicating liquor to a child under 16, except under medical direction or in emergency cases.

The RVIPF is reminding booth owners, vendors, restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels not to sell or serve alcohol to minors.

Adults have also been urged not to purchase or provide alcohol to minors under any circumstances.

The RVIPF calls on the community to remain alert and support all efforts to protect our youth during these celebrations.

They are selling alcohol to minors in the village. Put a undercover or mole in the village and you will see what boots is selling alcohol to the minors. Another thing, there are adults buying the drinks for minors and passing it to the minors. Another thing going on in the village, there are people selling drugs to the minors in the village. All you have to do is watch and you will see what is going on. If booth owners stole building supplies you think…………………..,,,,,,,

lol now yall want to say this?

yall dont even got a sex offender list... who going stop the pedos from buying them it or the pedos friends who working in boots or maybe even the pedo working the boots them self? dont forget we had grown men giving sex drugs to primary school students.. yall keep playing around and dont get serious about the youths

anyhow its too late. we have alrdy groom a certain culture amongst the youths which is rum/drugs/sex/gangs/dancehall music - which is about sex and violence/ and ofc smoking.... nothing wrong with the green plant but the kinda persons and crowd it does attract are not the best kind of people and those people will influence the youths who wanna fit in...

and jueve coming up now...is anyone gonna stop minors from getting involved? doubt it! yall alrdy gave the criminals ,thugs, nighlife people control of what if "fun" and accepted in the bvi. the rooster have come home to roost and all of them ain reach yet..

AH yes i heard police was getting a lot of push back and the festival wanted zero police presence this year..... i wonder why....

Mali don night: set of smoking, thugs, criminals. half naked minors and gang members flocked the festival grounds....

now another night we hear seeing a fight that police try to breakup only to get stabbed...

so imagine if it had zero police presence? yall would of been like a set of wild animals in there.

i hope yall wish come true and you start to see the significance of order, self respect, morals, laws, and police presence

to all the young people that upset and giving push back against the older generation who are calling out yall lack of morals, self respect and vulgar behaviour.... i guess this is what yall want right?

this is wah yall like to embrace? attacking on another and stabbing police... smoking your brains out with 12yr olds? dry humping one another and having 12yr girls walk around half naked? .. young people yall truly dont see ntn wrong with this?

having minors get drunk and watch yall young adults do all kinda nonsense in their presence for them to copy and be influenced? you can argue well dont send your kids to festival...true but the younger youths still look to yall as role models not the older generation. the festival committee is to blame as well yall got artist coming here singing about sex, drugs, gangs, violence etc and one even big up a well known criminal who dies recently...

mind you there is no sex offender list while all of this is going down... imagine all the offenders that attend these nights....

young people and the younger youths you guys are straight up glorifying criminality and see ntn wrong with it.... but when crime start to surge again....when 13yrs old with ak47 break into your homes... when you start to see a huge number of highschool drop outs... when you start to see surge in domestic violence and single mothers...when you start see more gangs like the young money boys gang this affects all of us old generation and new.

all I can now to everyone who see ntn wrong with what takes place during festival is:

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil

Is one of these heavily intoxicated teens that is drinking in the village and smoking the chemical lace weed getting behind the wheel or riding a scooter and cause a serous accident. And yes, there are teens driving cars, the police just don’t see them because they do it under the cover of darkness.

Where is the Red Cross stationed in the village? One night we needed assistance but couldn’t locate them. Medical support should be clearly visible and easily accessible during events like these

Do not twist the law. It clearly says in other words do not give alcohol to people under 16. As for alcohol it is not for most people. People do it for lack of adult options and as a crutch. The 16 age limit was for English people to have their kids drinking at parties. It should be left alone. Teach your kids to want awareness at a party when others are drunk. When I grew up black people were not into drinking or hard drugs at parties and festival.

People should understand alcohol is more dangerous than any other recreational drug period. Even if they arrest people for weed we know it kills no one like alcohol. Alcohol causes people to die, black out, drive reckless, be unaware, drown, get cancer, unwanted kids and have regrets. People throw up from alcohol and act stupid, ramp over speed bumps off beer. It stays in your system kills brain cells and causes withdrawals the day after.

Never seen that from tobacco or weed but we act as if a cigarette or joint is worse than a beer. Cigarette is hard to quit but it does not lead to violence or drunken accidents during festival. Alcohol is clean because it is legal. If it was illegal people will die from dirty drinks and wood alcohol.

Those underage drinkers be swigging the alcohol and leaninggggggg back. They love that Hennessy. It is only here Hennessy is a big time drink. In America Hennessy is a liquor that is basically a low budget drink. Some say it was developed for hood drinking.

Think they are grown. By the time they hit 20 their bodies is going to be messed up from the liquor. I’m surprised none of them ain’t passed out from alcohol poisoning. Yes, you can get alcohol poisoning.
