ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With the spate of violent crimes in the territory and recognising the need to act urgently, the Rotary clubs in the Virgin Islands, along with other concerned entities, have launched a Public Peace and Conflict Resolution Campaign.

The campaign actually started at the end of February 2021, with a 15-second advertisement that encouraged persons to ‘Stop, Think, Before You Act’.

Today, March 21, 2021; however, a massive billboard promoting the campaign was launched at the roundabout in Road Town.

Notably on the billboard is a scene from the movie Black Panther where T’Challa/Black Panther, the King of Wakanda, engages in battle with the antagonist Erik ‘Killmonger’ Stevens aka N'Jadaka, who values power and dominance as paths to both liberation and self-actualisation.

Premier Fahie supports campaign

Among those who attended the launch of the billboard were Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5).

Foremost among several children in attendance was teenage philanthropist, Jaleel F. Cameron, who welcomed the campaign, noting that it would require a lot of teaching for persons to appreciate there are ways to solve conflicts other than violence.

Children adversely affected by violent crimes- Jaleel F. Cameron

Cameron also said he is disappointed with the high number of murders in the territory but admitted that at first he felt “numb” to the killings, but understands now that, with every death, people are adversely affected, including children.

The young man also expressed gratitude to organisations that are continuing to positively impact the territory’s youths, including Youth Empowerment Project (YEP).

Meanwhile, the campaign will also see the launch of a documentary titled 'Agents for Change', the production of a music video being led by Kamau A. Georges, along with other promotional materials.

The campaign is sponsored by the four Rotary clubs of the VI, Government of the Virgin Islands, Infinite Solutions, Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) and JAHPHIX multimedia solutions.

Yes, this is a good move for the people to stop the violence killing each other. I cannot believe what has been happening on our home land. Let us also remember that the pandemic is still among us and out of these 20 people shown in this picture, only 9 are masked. We cannot try to fix one of the problems and forget the others. Please report anyone you know are known criminals by mailing in your information along with drawing of the locations, since everyone is afraid of a backlash from these low lives. We must band together to rid ourselves of this evil that is upon us.

The disgraceful disparaging example set by racist bigot gus set a bad tone for our country at home and abroad. His contract should have been terminated long ago. Instead our democratic leaders had to suffer under his bullying and intimidation as the UK silently supported his degrading behavior. Now he’s finally gone, let’s hope our dialogue on reparations and street name changes continues and are listened to, not dismissed and insulted. Gus assaulted our history ancestors and us.

It’s a little ironic that they should use one of the many films that glorifies violence to promote peace.

see how a few bad apples looking to spoil the whole bunch: the dope dealers and traffickers up and down bad playing each other so that is the cause for the gun play in the country: wait till the horse out the stable now trying to lock the door however it is better to try something but the sad thing about this mess U might be the right place at the wrong time when some idiot armed with his high power gun ends up shooting u. the matter is a law enforcement problem and left unchecked will seriously disrupt our once tranquil society

Maybe those Rotarians with their big salaries might be smarter than you? You definitely didn't spend much time learning to read and write that's for sure.

Maybe their efforts are wasted but at least they are doing something in their community. What did you do today to help your community apart from blogging your 5 cents' worth?

Um. I can think of more effective ways to spend the money that would work for a longer time than the pay off from a billboard. Sometimes I wonder if people just want to be seen to be doing something or actually want to make a change in culture.
It's even more ironic when you consider some of the members and their income streams.
