NORTH SOUND, Virgin Gorda, VI – Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance with responsibility for Lands, Dr the Honourable Dr. Natalio Wheatley (R7), and a team from the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change met with residents of North Sound, Virgin Gorda on Thursday, January 4, 2024.

The meeting came as part of public consultations continuing on the Virgin Islands Crown Land Policy.

The Virgin Islands Crown Land Policy governs the administration management, development, and use of all Crown land for all purposes, and focuses on strengthening the transparent administration and management of Crown land, including disposal of the same.

Ahead of the meetings, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment Natural Resources Mr. Ronald Smith-Berkeley, said that it is the mandate of the Government of the Virgin Islands to have this policy extensively discussed with the purpose of sensitising the community, as well as keeping persons informed about Government decisions.

“This policy should be the concern of every Virgin Islander; it is important that everyone gets involved in the public discussions regarding this very important matter. We are eager to listen to your suggestions, and so we encourage you to give us your feedback, and let your individual and collective opinions be part of the final document which will be forwarded to Cabinet for final approval,” he said.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the policy also details the history of Crown Lands, an essential part of the Virgin Islands' past, and touches on other topics such as the first-time homeownership programme, lease of commercial and agricultural land, and Crown Land application criteria.

@ The watchdog. This same thing happened to me back when they were offering crown land up in Mine Hill maybe 20 something years ago, someone was scratching names off the list so they couldn’t get any. I know that certain names were scratched off the list because this was acts of jealousy and malice aimed at other natives who didn’t like other VG natives.
But in the long run, we’re only here for a short time, and this land will be here for the next hundreds of years. All we can do is be strong, and let them see that these hateful actions are gonna hurt all of us in the end.

Everyone needs to take some time and read this policy. It will affect generations to follow in terms of access to crown land. Note the criteria.
