ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Angry protesters descended on the streets of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik on April 4, 2016, outraged by their Prime Minister’s alleged offshore accounts in the Virgin Islands that were brought to light in the so-called Panama Papers.

Protesters held various placards, some of them in English, expressing their anger at the revelations.

One placard had obscene language, saying Prime Minister: F***K OFF, GO TO TORTOLA.

Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson reportedly failed to declare his stake in an offshore company based in the [British] Virgin Islands. The revelation has made Icelanders “mad” at their government, with some demanding a no-confidence vote and the PM’s resignation.

It was announced today, April 5, 2016, in several news outlets that Mr Gunnlaugsson had resigned, however, a newspaper in Iceland, Iceland Monitor, has since stated that the Prime Minister's office in Iceland issued a press statement in English to the international press saying that the Prime Minister has not resigned, merely stepped aside for an unspecified amount of time and will continue to serve as the Chairman of the Progressive Party.

According to the Iceland Monitor, people were angered not only by the revelations of their PM’s unreported accounts, but also by his reaction to the protest. “It’s not like everyone is going to attend,” Gunnlaugsson said in an interview, sparking even more fury.

When asked by the reporter of Icelandic Channel 2 News if he had, at any point, considered resigning in light of the latest revelations, Gunnlaugsson said that he would not resign due to this or any other matter, because his government had achieved “amazing results in very important issues,” and “it’s important that it gets to finish that work.”

He also rejected an idea of stepping aside during the course of the investigation, saying “Simply accusing someone of something in order to force them to resign is not in harmony with how we want our society to function.”

Responding to the accusations against his wife, Anna Palsdottir, the PM stressed that she had always paid taxes in Iceland, even while owning a “foreign” company. According to Gunnlaugsson, it would be wrong to label the firm an “offshore company,” as “it has always been taxed in Iceland.”

Should we now expect an influx of 'tourists' exposed by the Panama Papers to show up at TB Lettsome? We'd better get that runway ready...

This is what pisses me off with these big countries. They know if anyone from their country signed up a business here, the big money does NOT STAY HERE. They take their monies and distribute it to other big country banks. If they had common sense they would know our little islands are not keeping their money so why beat up on us?

What's wrong if someone chooses to bank his money in Tortola? He search every where and find Tortola to be the best and safest place to keep his money. Its not illegal money. This is good for Tortola. We couldn't get a better off shore investmwnt advertisement than that..

@Beautiful, there is nothing wrong with him banking his money in Tortola, but, he is a public figure. If he was a private citizen like you and I, it would not have been a problem. It makes his Country look like he is hiding something or stealing from his Country.

actually, I agree with everything you are saying. But I also have to agree with Boo. It would be helpful if you weren't "shouting" with your caps.
Bring it down and keep talking about corruption and lost money, whether it is taking $8 mil promised to EE seweage and using it for another project, or "borrowing" from Social Security, or outright "losing" $35 mil on the TPP. There are consequences, yet the ministers running this show are not taking any responsibility with taxpayers money.

Those poor fools just wanted something to be angry about. I can bet they don't even know where Tortola is. It's shameful how people are using our products and services to play politics in their own countries, when they have absolutely no clue about what we really do here. People continue to fall for these foolish distractions while the real nastiness goes on right in front their faces.

We would all be united if we diddt have so much bad mindedness. The idiots who are criticizing the Government don't even realize that they too will be affected if the Financial Aservices Sector dies. What a bunch of lunatics. No wonder the BVI will remain the way it is and the expats will continue to laugh at us behind our backs. People this is about our future and our childrens future. We need to unite against the outside forces that are tying to destroy our territory...

WE the People of these Virgin Islands had better rise up to the challenge of facing what is real in the world we live in. This world has changed on us all. This Tolian not going anywhere. Who choose to remain here must have the internal fortitude to fight for what is right, look out for this country. Call a spade a spade BUT we cannot behave like people do when when they go to church come Sunday. [Praise and worship and great sermons but when call to the alter to give life to Christ they sit in their seat and not react.] This country is suppose t be ours and those who were granted status be called ours. if we do not stand up now we will be for ever stretching out hands for stuff.

Arise, people, arise. Start the conversation. We need to know how we are handling this leaking papers business. Because all big countries are doing the same thing and the are not targeting them. Can't we all see that this is a racist, prejudice, apartheid, white supremacy thing being forced on us again. They are out through the bushes in the BVI watching and talking and waiting for the fan to blow sh*eeite. People, we banded together before; let us do it again. That is why the people keep saying, the Constitution has no provision in it for the first step to self-detemination, because if that's where we must go, let us go. We cannot let these crackers put us in Slavery again -- what the people always saying in their plays -- them want to take the people land, houses and beaches. Look trouble nuh. We might got to go plant ground food again. If we had self-rule, we could do a lot to protect the people until we get back on our feet. Let's start the conversation, Mark, Myron, Sowande, DeCastro, Edmund, Dr. A. Smith, and all the I and I men and women....Calling on the Noel Lloyds, Patsy Lakes, Brushies, Lou Harrigan, the Tommon Tree Boys, the Ghetto Boys, the Nottingham crew, the Gardos and the Tampoes -- let's fight for our rights.
