BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Honestly Speaking radio show host Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called on the Government of the Virgin Islands to rebuild the Prospect Reef facility into a 4-star hotel a priority, given the increase in visitors to the territory through American Airlines.

“We need a decent four-star branded hotel and all of the other surrounding accoutrements to line that beautiful piece of the waterfront that has become a sore eye now for the last 10 to 12 years,” he said on his show on ZBVI 780 AM on June 6, 2023.

The commentator called it a shame and a disgrace and accused the government of not having the will to even demolish the buildings and clear the path for rebuilding.

The Prospect Reef Hotel and Resort was destroyed by the hurricanes of 2017 and has been left abandoned since then.

More beds needed in VI- Skelton-Cline

“If this government wants to flex its muscle as it enhances airlift, expand the runway, simultaneously you got to have beds and to ensure bodies in those beds and to ensure more planes [are] coming. American, Delta, JetBlue, you name it, people have to have places to lay their heads.

“Of course,  we have a tremendous marine sector, which can also be expanded and we do have more beds on the water than we have on land, but that's not an excuse for us to continue to be derelict in our duty and not develop that space formally, Prospect Reef, and indeed our entire waterfront,” he added.

Recently, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said the now-defunct Prospect Reef Hotel and Resort is still being seen as one that can potentially cater to the business community.

“Very soon, I'll be engaging the Prospect Reef Board on issuing a Request for Proposal for development at Prospect Reef. We see Prospect Reef as a hotel that can offer convention center services to our business community and assist our business community in being able to host meetings, conferences et cetera,” Premier Wheatley told journalists at a press conference on May 2, 2023.

Prospect Reef buildings needs demolishing clean and secure the property properly to avoid any illigal or unsightly activities until a decision is made on what to do with that prime waterfront property.

Government should not be in the business of owning a hotel.
Put it up for sale and cut all the unnecessary red tape so it is an attractive investment for someone.

It would be wonderful if this property could be generated into parks and amenities for us all to enjoy. As a hotel it will always struggle as there is no natural beach in an country blessed with beautiful beaches. The cost of transportation is going to impact on success as a conference centre, its a non-starter. Wouldn't it be amazing if this was an expansive park, maybe even with a pitch and putt, with walking and running trails, perhaps a water play park for kids. It could have a cafe / gallery /events space. Perhaps some areas of allotments so people can grow their own veggies. We do not need mass tourism here, we need a high quality and exclusive product. We also need a decent place for our people to live and exercise.

Why should the Government build the hotel? it have enough. people in the community to buy the property and build a hotel or get an investor to do so .
The Government has their own responsibilities and they need to remove from things which the community can do do help themselves. ...

It seems to me the best option is to take on the expense of clearing the site and then solicit bids for affordable housing development. Nobody in their right mind would take on such a property without prior demolishment and clearance of the existing site.

is that the sea will eventually reclaim this landfill with the ruins of a poorly planned and constructed hotel. Don't interfere with nature!!

If CSC had work on the solution of Prospect Reef as a Consultant maybe progress would have been forthwith. But instead, he pocketed monies with no transparency of what he consulted on.

If you think that will work Claude why not dig into your piggy bank and do it.

The reason there is no 4 star or otherwise hotel there is because people who know about hotels dont think it would work

It should be made into a pay-to-play for each event. All-year-round Coney Island for all ages. Have a Zip-Line, a quick tram ride that takes you around the entire park, mini bumper cars, a water slide, walk through spook house, potato sack races, basketball dunking, face painting, hair braiding, henna tattoos, fish aquarium, magic show on stage, board games competitions like dominos, checkers, singing/dancing entertainment, food vendors, ice cream, hermit crab races, remote control small boat races on the sea, birthday party rentals, Bingo, anything that can raise money to keep it up and running but also somewhere every day for locals and tourists alike. Any other fun ideas should be mentioned.
