Promotion & relegation to spice up BVIFA League season
The new system, which begins on January 26, 2014 on the A.O. Shirley Ground, will see the top six teams from last year’s National League playing each other in the Premier League, whilst five other teams will be battling it out to win promotion from the new Division One.
Whilst the early action in the 2013/14 season has featured both the Virgin Gorda Cup and Wendoll Williams Cup being staged successfully on the Recreation Ground in Virgin Gorda, with the re-opening of the A.O. Shirley Ground, league action will centre on Tortola with a Premier League and a Division One with promotion and relegation increasing the competitive nature of all games for all teams.
Both leagues will open on January 26 with games on the A.O. Shirley from 5 p.m. and then fixtures will alternate with one game on the A.O.Shirley on Saturdays, two games on Sundays and one game on the Recreation Ground also on Sundays.
The Premier League includes the Islanders F.C. the Ball Stars, One Love F.C. the Sugar Boyz, the Rebels F.C. and the Wolues F.C.
The First Division includes East End, VG United, the Panthers F.C. the Haitian Stars and Old Madrid.
Each League will feature two rounds with the top club in Division one gaining promotion to the Premier League for the following season, whilst the bottom club in this season’s Premier League will be demoted to Division one for 2014/15.
The Terry Evans Cup will be played on Wednesday evenings on the A.O. Shirley Ground, with games starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday February 5, 2014.
The leagues will take a mid-season break so the BVIFA can host a new initiative for 2014, which will also see a 9 a-side competition played for both Men and Women’s teams at Greenland starting on February 16, with full details to follow.
In 2012/13, the Islanders duly completed an unbeaten league season with a 3-2 win over One Love and the beleaguered Ballstars claimed third spot with a 4-0 rout of the Rebels.
