ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Known for being very vocal on issues that affect the territory and her district, Honourable Delores Christopher, Deputy Speaker and Fifth District Representative, made a strong call for her district to get more attention, adding that projects earmarked for her district years ago are yet to be undertaken or completed.

She was at the time speaking in the House of Assembly (HoA) on April 27, 2018, during the continuation of the 2018 Budget Debate.

She said, “The Fifth District has its share of needs and I am not going to say wants, this is needs and a lot of it has been earmarked for quite some time maybe three or four budgets. So I hope that this time and I know that the people are looking forward but I want to say thanks to all the people of the Fifth.”

Hon Christopher pointed out that persons don’t really understand that the Fifth District is very mountainous, how difficult and steep the terrains are and how rocky are the roads and this is why the need for walls are great.

“Because people are trying to reside in the hills, that’s the whole of the Fifth District. You could start from Johnson's Ghut come back down this way,” she explained while noting that persons have been very “patient for years”.

Meanwhile, she added that they are also “thankful” for the work that has already been accomplished so far but told the House that there are still some “needs” within her district.

“We have our needs and the storms have done great damage but even before we go to the hurricane the flood made some damages too. For example, a mile or so of Great Mountain road it very undermined,” Hon Christopher said.

“This is not only for the fifth district”

Meanwhile, the Government backbencher emphasised that the much-needed attention to the Fifth District are “big issues and problems” that must be fixed, adding that it is not only for the benefit of her district but all the other districts.

“These are big issues and these are problems that we have to fix. It is not only for the Fifth District that those roads are serving. They are serving all the people who traverse them going into the Second [District], going into Brewers Bay all the way to Cane Garden Bay..We have to protect these roads because some of the roads are alternate routes."

The Deputy Speaker added, “I know the Minister of Communications said he has earmarked them and I know that he will do his best.”
