ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The BVI Tennis Association (BVITA) announced on Tuesday January 19, 2016 the appointment of a new National Coach, professional Serbian tennis player, Ms Vojislava Lukic.

“We've chosen a female, who we hope will inspire girls to play tennis. Currently, we have a boys team and not enough girls,” commented BVITA President Carol Mitchell.

Ms Lukic, who has played alongside the likes of fellow professional Serbian players Jelena Janković, Ana Jovanović and Ana Timotić, will be based at the Long Look - East End Tennis Club, where she will help to build a national team.

“Ms Lukic played for her country, Serbia, a number of times alongside the best players in the world. She was their number 1 Junior and ranked the number 6 International Tennis Federation Junior in the World and has participated in all of the 4 grand slams, with her best result on the grand slam tour a quarter-final in Wimbledon ITF,” noted Mitchell.

“28 year old Lukic, currently ranked at number 383 by the Women’s Tennis Association, has won 8 titles so far - her first three titles already back in 2006.”

Last week Lukic beat Jennifer Elie (USA), Petra Januskova (Canada) and Laura Pigossi (Brazil) to reach the main draw of the $50,000 event in Charlottesville where she lost 1-6, 2-6 to Elizaveta Ianchuk of Ukraine in the 1st round.

More about Vojislava Lukic

According to Wikipedia, Lukic achieved her highest career ranking as world number 203 in singles on 20 August 2007, and world number 223 in doubles on 8 October 2007. Lukić has so far won eight ITF titles in singles and four in doubles. She also played for Serbia Fed Cup team in 2007.

In 2008, after an ITF tournament in Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands, Lukić temporarily withdrew from professional tennis. Although she played doubles at the ITF tournament in Dubai in 2009 partnering with Bojana Jovanovski, she did not make a full comeback until 2012. In the meantime, Lukić founded her own tennis school for girls and worked as a television presenter and model.

I am a parent whose child is a member of this tennis club. I am appalled that such positive news which can only uplift the community and our kids is being torn down by such negative responses.
