ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Opposition Member Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has called on legislators to find ways to ease the burden on the people of the Virgin Islands (VI) as, according to him prices for goods and services, along with taxes, have gone up while the rate of pay has remained mostly constant.

According to Hon Malone, the taxpayers of the VI are already under strain with having to fund recovery from the various economic fallouts.

‘Taxpayers continue to fund recovery’- Hon Malone

“We must recognise that we a living in what I call a post-disaster-pandemic and war-era: post-2017 hurricanes; post-2020 -2021 COVID Global Pandemic; post a 2021-2022 Commission of Inquiry and an ongoing economic fallout of a Russia Ukrainian war.

“The taxpayers of the Virgin Islands continue to fund recovery from each of these occurrences from regional loans, social security grants, the consolidated fund, the reserve fund, and the miscellaneous purpose fund,” Hon Malone said in a statement on the passing in the House of Assembly (HoA) of the second Supplementary Appropriation (SAP) reducing total estimated expenditure by $8,069,884.

The SAP was approved during the continuation of the 4th Session of the Fourth House of Assembly at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom, Tortola on August 30, 2022.

‘No UK Grants & Recovery Assistance forthcoming’

According to Hon Malone, funding originally destined for operations and capital improvements and for development had to be diverted as the territory is expected and has provided the funds required for recovery from these disasters, pandemics and economic fallouts from its own resources as UK grants and UK recovery assistance are not forthcoming.

“Nevertheless, as legislators, we are called upon to recognise the economic strains that are being exacted on each household and on the citizens of the Virgin Islands.

“We must find ways to ease the burden and lighten the economic loads. The prices of food, energy, transportation, taxes, and everyday living have all risen and yet the rate of pay has remained constant in most measures. This is not easily fixed as, like fuel charges, it affects the price of goods and services in each economy.”

According to the Opposition Member, all efforts must now be centered on legislating, approving, and assenting to the various revenue-raising measures proposed in earlier meetings.

“There is a balance and together we must seek and have it resolved for the benefit of all. I so resolve,” Hon Malone stated.

St Kitts, Grenada, St Vincent and BVI next..All of them need to go... They are greedy and very selfish, when they vote for themselves to get increase, no thoughts of poor people... I hope the new constitution change where "no public servant elected or appointed can take part in their own salary increases or anything that benefit them financially"...

Never cease to amaze me. Hike from 2017 to present brother where were you all the time. Oh let me remind you that you sat in the government now you on the opposition all these hikes came under your watch. No mercy for the people then, mercy now how ironic. You all sat at the helm and you all allow tax hikes on people property even when we were without repair and money to repair. Some without a roof over their heads now you come here speaking about hikes. For heaven sake go sit down. The struggle was real then and so it is today. A loaf of bread from overseas costing nearly $7.00 cornflakes $9.plus, 18 eggs $6.99 a dozen eggs 4.plus.to see a doctor price gone up. House rent gone up everything gone up. Light Bill's gone up. Interesting statement

You all are really listening to the man who sold us out wow. How can people trust these puppets. I keep telling you all they are following a script. This puppet works for the elites and he has to do what they say or they will be killed or fired. You can't go to work and do what you want you have a job description and you must follow it just like he's doing .ask yourself why is every government talking about the same thing.

We all know that Foy was large and incharge and ruled with an iron fist, his members was under his dictatorship and obeah spell, they had to go along with him,,, So don't blame him now for speaking out. He is right. Wages need to increase $11.00 per HR..or atlases minimum $9.50.pee hr. That is barely living wage... Hope the others see the need for people to live...These businesses are making lots of profit, they can afford to do that, they usual complain when they expect to make 3 million profit and only make two..they are still doing very well.. Put the people first for a change, increase minimum wage..

There is plenty of revenue to sustain a vibrant economy and rebuild from the hurricanes. The problem is idiots like carvin have been managing the taxpayers money and now we have nothing to show for it beyond a fisherman’s wharf in baughers bay.

What a tangled web we weave when we first set out to deceive. Look how things turn around. From 2020 and just before Head Coach got arrested all we were hearing from this man is vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vaccine!! Everyone was so sick and fed up with hearing that! Carvin ignored EVERYTHING ELSE!! We have so many homeless persons and mentally challenged persons walking the streets and this man has not done anything to correct this unfortunate state in the Territory because he had a mandate to fulfill and that was the WAXCINE!!! I am sorry, but please, ah beg you, don't put your name on that ballot because all the people's eyes will be seeing instead of your name is WAXCINE!!

I was wondering if a price hike just reach here yesterday by the timing of the article but now I realise he talking about the same price hike that been going on since he was in government and did NOTHING and said NOTHING about it. I agree with the majority, he need to go siddown. Empty vessels making the loudest noise. I also like the new name he has been given... "Mr Waxcine!" Why he dont just stick to that script!
