WICKHAM’S CAY II, Tortola VI- The Premier's $92,500 Cadillac Escalade was involved in a lone accident at around 11:00 P.M. tonight, July 31, 2016, outside The Moorings on the dual carriageway on Wickham’s Cay II.

It is believed that only Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith’s police driver was the occupant of the state-owned vehicle.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still unclear to this news site.

Meanwhile, our reporter confirmed seeing the Premier live at the 2016 Miss BVI Pageant with his wife, First Lady Lorna G. Smith, around the same time the accident occurred.

It was in February that this news site reported that the Premier and Minister of Finance had approved the purchase for himself a brand new 2016 Cadillac Escalade at the cost of Ninety Two Thousand, Five Hundred Dollars ($92,500.00).

This information was made public following a question in the House of Assembly on February 4, 2016 posed by senior Opposition Member Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith. They were at the time in the Sixth Sitting of the First Session of the Third House of Assembly.

The news was received with outrage by the public in a time when the country was reported to be broke and government could not pay its bills.

To justify the purchased of such an expensive SUV, the Premier told a Press Conference that the previous Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government had also purchased new government vehicles.

If the premier was at the show why was the vehicle on the road?will this be a burden on taxpayers? It is high time for this government to be accountable to the people of this country. Too many things are taken for granted. There are too many holidays in one week. This is not good for the businesses. Why are all those international artists brought in for festival? Can the public purse bear the strain? The whole thing is out of proportion. Why do webring artists that are rejected by other countries. Does this government care anything about the health of its citizen? Seemingly it is time for a snap election. We are going down a dangerous path.

@ Outspoken - what you are saying is the premier did nt walk to the show, so of course the vehicle dropped him to the show. However, at the time of the accident he was in fact at the show. Which he himself confirmed. That being said, the vehicle should have been parked at the show until the premier was ready to leave the show.

Concern, your first question is a bit silly. Should he have waited around outside for about 4 ours until the show was finished? Usually a driver is allowed to go and come back....Could be that he had just left from dropping off the Premier.

You people sit and listen to Mel talk about independence, and don't reason for yourself. He has a safe harbor, meaning when stuff hit the fan, mind you all, he and he people have US citizenship and family in the US, and can leave in a hurry and leave you all behind to deal with the horrors independence like all those Islands who went down that road face til this day. What safe harbor you have? Direct rule is your safe harbor.

With independence the US dollar as the currency will leave and so will the financial services. Those are what keep BVI relevant. You ever see Citco or Trident or Harneys in those other islands? The US dollar. The ministers pushing for independence are frightened of going to jail when the UK probe is completed. They pushing for independence to try to save themselves. That is their safe harbor even though it will not do one ounce of good for the BVI, they dress it up trying to make it look nice. But the idea is emperor with out clothes. When they speak of Independence, that is their safe harbor, and nothing to do with the good of the country.

Everyone looking for a safe harbor. For the mass, direct rule is that safe harbor to continue the use of the US dollar. If you go independent you will have to the ec dollar or one of those non US dollar currency. The financial service which can move overnight because of technology will migrate to Anguilla, Cayman, Turks and Bermuda. Plus let us remember who put the country in the direction of direct rule in the first place, the NDP. If the UK feels they are not fit to run the country, how can they be fit to run the country independently?

Direct rule is your safe harbor.

You are so right, safe harbor. Their independence will suddenly become their dictatorship and of course that means a suspended constitution and therefore no financial questions answered. This independence talk could very well be a trial baloon put forth by their advisors(some of their so called rich white friends) in order to gauge the response of the people. These advisors, no doubt, may also have an armed force waiting in the wings.
