ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), will attend and represent the Virgin Islands at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026, scheduled for November 1-4 in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

The biennial summit will bring together Heads of Government, ministers, and representatives from business, civil society, and youth organisations from across the Commonwealth’s 56 member nations.

Focus of the Summit

CHOGM 2026 will be held under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

The theme is intended to guide discussions on strengthening cooperation, encouraging sustainable investment, and advancing shared prosperity throughout the Commonwealth.

Leaders are expected to address shared priorities including climate resilience, trade, innovation, equality, and sustainable development.

Commonwealth Collaboration

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is hosted by member countries on a rotating basis and provides an opportunity for national leaders to coordinate responses to common challenges.

The 2026 meeting will unite countries under the spirit of partnership and prosperity, with a focus on delivering practical outcomes for citizens across the Commonwealth.

The Premier’s participation will ensure that the Virgin Islands is represented at the high-level gathering as Commonwealth leaders work to build stronger partnerships and unlock new opportunities for member states.

Commonwealth Status

The Virgin Islands, however, is not an independent member state of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is a British Overseas Territory and is associated with the Commonwealth through its constitutional connection to the United Kingdom.

Commonwealth membership is limited to sovereign states, so the Virgin Islands does not hold full membership in its own right. Instead, it participates in Commonwealth-related activities through the United Kingdom.
