Premier Wheatley saddened by Chandrikapersad Santokhi's death

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Government and the people of the Virgin Islands stand in sympathy with Suriname and the wider Caribbean Community as they mourn the passing of H.E. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, the 9th President of the Republic of Suriname (2020–2025).

Premier of the Virgin Islands, Dr. the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), expressed his sorrow and noted that he had the privilege of personally engaging with former President Santokhi during his tenure.

H.E. Chandrikapersad Santokhi passed away unexpectedly on March 30, 2026, at the age of 67.

Premier reflected on President Santokhi's time as CARICOM Chair

In a Facebook statement released on March 31, 2026, Premier Wheatley reflected on his time as Chairman of CARICOM, highlighting how well he was received by President Santokhi during his visit to Paramaribo. 

Under Santokhi's leadership, the Virgin Islands received substantial support for its self-governance and broader regional collaboration.

Premier Wheatley extended sympathies to Suriname

Former President Santokhi, affectionately known as 'Chan', will be remembered for his involvement in the investigation of the 1982 killings of more than a dozen political opponents, a tragic event that left a lasting impact on the South American country. 

He served as President from 2020 to 2025 and previously held the position of Minister of Justice and Police from 2005 to 2010.

Premier Wheatley extended his deepest sympathies to the Government and people of the Republic of Suriname, as well as to Santokhi's wife, family, and political colleagues.
