ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Last evening, Tuesday, September 23, 2024, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) hosted a reception in honour of the Rt Honourable Baroness Margaret Hodge, DBE, who is currently in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Governor Daniel Pruce and Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development, Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL), were also in attendance.

The guest list also included young professionals and persons from the financial services industry and other sectors of the economy.

No ordinary visit

Baroness Hodge, the United Kingdom’s Anti-Corruption Champion, is visiting the Territory to assess progress in implementing commitments on beneficial ownership registers.

In a post to her X account on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Baroness Hodge said she had “productive meetings” with Premier Wheatley, Hon Smith and leaders of the Territory’s financial sector.

“I was encouraged by the open dialogue on ownership transparency and the shared commitment to explore whether we can reach a common position by November's Joint Ministerial Council.”

Premier Wheatley had said he was the one who invited Baroness Hodge to the Virgin Islands, although the Foreign & Commonwealth Development Office had scripted a different narrative.

What does it matter? Do you think that Madamme Hodge will share her portfolio with us and let us know where all her holdings are? How many people in the political arena practice full disclosure?? Exactly!
God knows and sees ALL. Trust Him and Him only

    OKaayy..Soo, "DBE"!

What does it mean, and who qualifies for such a title?

In the territory, I read of an" OBE", or an " MBE"!

Perhaps, there are others, but for me, these two are the most visible!

Do we have, locally, a "DBE"?

Just wondering if it's a title bestowed upon persons living in the Kingdom, and whether any Virgin Islander, is considered qualifiable!

It's great to see the Virgin Islands focused on ownership transparency. Baroness Hodge's visit highlights their commitment. Speaking of challenges, navigating the world of finance can feel like playing a complex game, almost like mastering the fast-paced Slope Game. It's encouraging to hear about the open dialogue and the potential for a shared position by November.
