Historic commitment realised

Premier Wheatley delivered his remakrs from London, where he was for constitutional negotiations with the United Kingdom, as part of the official program marking the occasion on Friday, September 25, 2026. Premier Wheatley emphasised that all parties had kept their promise to support the Greenland Stadium Project, which began with FIFA's generous commitment seven years ago. The newly inaugurated artificial pitch, alongside other development works on the site, represents the culmination of sustained investment and collaboration between the BVIFA, the Government of the Virgin Islands, and FIFA.

"These works, together with the continued development of this technical centre and stadium, will create new opportunities for our territory," the Premier stated.

Opening doors for athletes and youth

Premier Wheatley highlighted that the upgraded facilities would enable the Virgin Islands to host more international friendlies and competitive matches, providing local players with the level of competition and exposure needed to develop into world-class athletes. Beyond elite competition, he stressed that the Technical Centre would strengthen youth training programs and inspire the next generation to embrace the values of discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and excellence.

"This is the transformative power of your efforts," he told football administrators, coaches, and players gathered for the occasion.

Football as a pathway to opportunity

The Premier reflected on the unique ability of football to make dreams come true, noting that the beautiful game has opened doors for young people from humble beginnings, underserved communities, and small countries around the world.

"It reminds us that talent, determination, and opportunity can overcome many barriers," Premier Wheatley said. "The people of the Virgin Islands understand this truth very well. Though we are a small country, we dream big."

He pointed to Virgin Islands athletes already making their mark on athletics tracks and basketball courts internationally as evidence of what is possible when talent meets opportunity.

A future for BVI footballers

"With the quality facilities you all are creating, we'll soon be able to say the same for our footballers," the Premier declared, expressing confidence that BVI players will soon join their compatriots in demonstrating excellence on the international stage.

The ceremony was attended by FIFA President Giovanni V. Infantino, who performed the ceremonial ribbon-cutting to officially open the Technical Centre. 

Looking ahead with optimism

As the territory celebrates this achievement, Premier Wheatley called on all stakeholders to look forward with optimism to what the new Technical Centre will make possible for future generations of Virgin Islanders.

The Greenland Stadium Project, funded through FIFA Forward grants and supported by the lease of Crown land in 2019, stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when vision, commitment, and partnership converge for the development of sport and youth in the Virgin Islands.
