Premier Wheatley hails legacy of the late Charles S. Tobias
Charles S. Tobias MBE, the creator and founder of Pusser’s Rum Ltd, passed away on October 14, 2025, at the age of 91. Although he was born in Canada, Mr Tobias made a substantial impact during his years in the Virgin Islands.
Contribution to VI economy 'visionary & enduring'
The Premier noted in a press release that, "His contributions to the Virgin Islands economy were both visionary and enduring. By choosing to base Pusser’s operations in the Virgin Islands, Mr Tobias generated local employment, supported small businesses, and helped build a tourism ecosystem that continues to benefit our people. He was a staunch advocate for keeping the brand rooted in the Virgin Islands, even when offered more lucrative opportunities elsewhere. That loyalty speaks volumes about his love for these islands and his belief in our potential."
He further added that "Charles S. Tobias MBE was a visionary entrepreneur, a decorated veteran, and a beloved member of our community. His legacy is woven into the very fabric of our tourism and cultural identity. Tobias was not merely the founder of Pusser’s Rum; he was a pioneer who helped shape the modern image of the Virgin Islands as a destination of charm, authenticity, and maritime heritage.”
Pusser’s Rum Ltd
Born in Canada, Tobias played a critical role in reviving the historic Royal Navy rum recipe in 1979 and establishing Pusser’s Rum Ltd. His efforts brought global attention to the Virgin Islands through his restaurants, retail shops, and branding. He created a signature experience that attracted visitors from around the world and solidified the Virgin Islands as a premier destination for sailing and hospitality.
The Premier further stated that beyond commerce, Tobias was a cultural ambassador who infused Pusser’s with stories of naval tradition, island hospitality, and community pride. His establishments became gathering places where locals and visitors alike could share meals, memories, and toasts to the sea.
Charitable work
Mr Tobias also supported charitable causes that contributed to civic life and consistently promoted the Virgin Islands with passion and integrity.
The Premier emphasised that, on behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands, he extends his deepest condolences to Mr Tobias’ family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.
He concluded, "The government honours Tobias not only for what he built but for how he built it—with courage, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to the VI. He was recognised and awarded as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2011 for his many contributions."
