ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance of the Virgin Islands (VI), Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has congratulated the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Honourable Philip E. Davis, on his recent historic victory at the polls.

Davis and the ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Bahamas general election on May 12, 2026, marking the first time in nearly three decades that a Bahamian leader has won two consecutive terms in office.

According to a social media post by the Office of the Premier of the Virgin Islands, Premier Wheatley "commends The Bahamas for its leadership within CARICOM, for championing the collective interests of Overseas Territories and reaffirms the Government’s commitment to strengthening ties with The Bahamas.

"Best wishes are extended for a successful and progressive term, and we look forward to witnessing the continued development and transformation of The Bahamas under Honourable Davis’s leadership."

The election was called earlier than expected, with Bahamian officials citing the approaching Atlantic hurricane season as a key reason for moving the vote forward. The previous 2021 election had also been held ahead of schedule.

So older people can still lead, Premier -- Mark, Ronnie, Myron, and you learn from them, and take your learning as well needed.

What is driving the new trend in regional general elections? In recent elections, either the incumbent governments are winning by landslides or the opposition is winning by a landslide. It is more incumbents winning by landslides. For example, incumbent Barbados government winning 30-0; long serving incumbent St. Vincent and Grenadines government getting a 14-1 shellacking; incumbent Antigua and Barbuda government winning going away in a landslide 15-2; Now, I think the incumbent Bahamas government despite low turnout winning 33 of 41 seats. Is the power of incumbency to high a hill to climb, an advantaging factor, or the opposition is weak, disorganized, etc, or the electorate is gambling on what is known over uncertainty?

@E. Leonard, bro Leonard you asking a lot of questions but we want answers, for we are not into all the discussion , debates., etc. We are in a fast food delivery mode so don’t hurt our heads asking all these questions like Socrates. We will worry about problems when they slap us across our face, bam, bam. Then we will worry about what to do, placing a band aid over issues. Again, we are of the fast food mind set. Fast food mentality sells convenience, ie, why spend all that time cooking when we can be eating in five minutes or less?

On one hand, many politicians stay too long,,overstay their welcome and fail or refuse to exit stage left. On the other hand, there should not be a team of newbies ,,there needs to be some members with some corporate history. Having to start over on every issue is costly. Then again a non-partisan civil service with the technical skills, and public affairs experience should be able to fill the void..There is a serious problem with the political ethos,,ie, the electorate that disengages after exiting the polling booth vice staying engaged. If they were engaged, they would kill the dead weights, the poor performers, those retired on duty,,etc, to the curb, and keep the top performers, those working for the public interest, not self interest, not building personal legacy, etc..Education, wealth status , etc, is not an entitlement, privilege, etc to public office. They must earned their way like all others.
