Premier Wheatley away from the Territory for high-level meetings

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) left the Territory yesterday, Sunday, June 8, 2025, to attend high-level meetings in the United States and the region.

According to a press release from the Premier’s Office on June 8, 2025, this duty travel will keep the Premier away from the Virgin Islands (VI) until June 20, 2025. 

Meeting to take Premier to NY, Brazil & SVG

The Premier is currently in New York for the C-24 Conference, taking place from June 9 to June 10; the conference refers to the Special Committee on Decolonisation's substantive meeting. 

Following this C-24 Conference, the Premier will attend the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Heads of Government Conference in Brazil from June 11 to June 14. The 55th Annual Meeting of the CBD Board will be convened, bringing together regional leaders, international partners and development experts to chart a path toward institutional resilience, economic competitiveness and inclusive growth for its Borrowing Member Countries (BMCs).

The meeting’s theme is ‘Building the Future: Resilient Institutions for a Greener, Stronger, and Inclusive Caribbean’. 

Premier Wheatley will also travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Authority Heads of Government meeting from June 16 to June 20.

The meeting’s focus will be on regional integration and collective prosperity, addressing urgent matters related to the changing international environment and its economic impact on the Caribbean region.

According to the press release, Premier Wheatley said attending these meetings provides an “invaluable opportunity”. 

 “They allow us to learn from the experiences of our regional colleagues and adopt strategies that can drive progress here in the Virgin Islands.  It is about advancing our Territory and ensuring that our people remain at the centre of our development agenda.”

    Question - shouldn't We The People vote on whether we want decolonization before our Premier (and I assume others) jet off for meetings on this subject & waste our tax-payers money?
