ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has urged all persons in the VI to ensure that they are included in the conversation and ensure that their views are heard as Constitutional Review gets under way in the VI.

During the Launch of Constitutional Review Public Consultations press conference yesterday, November 11, 2022, the premier also urged the public to participate in a respectful manner while noting that if persons do not make use of the opportunity, it may be a very long time before another one presents itself.

“I know that the members of the Constitutional Review Commission and all our Constitutional actors are fully aware that if a constitution does not reflect what the people want, then that contradicts everything a constitution is supposed to stand for and it makes a mockery of the process.”

He added that his belief is that the Constitutional Review Commission aims to ensure that the new Constitution reflects the aspirations and the will of the Virgin Islands people – who are the persons, along with the future generations, who will be most directly impacted by the Constitution when it is written and put into effect.

Commission must know what is in hearts & minds of Virgin Islanders

“The Virgin Islands we want to create for the future and the future we want for our people depend on the Constitution we are about to create. But, for the Commission to know what is in the hearts and minds of Virgin Islanders, we all have to come forward and tell them – whether in open meetings or in written submissions.”

The Premier at the launch event thanked all the members of the Constitutional Review Commission for their service and for their diligence at approach the assignment of constitutional review.

“I look forward to wide public participation, and I look forward to us having a robust, relevant, and functional Constitution that is aligned with our aspirations and vision as a people, and which will enable us to realize the dreams of our fore-bearers who carried the torch for generations before us.”

The Premier reminded that in designing the VI’s new Constitution there must be deep thought into what the people want it to say and contain, “We also have to look towards the future and gauge what our future needs from a constitution may be so that those issues can be taken into account during the Constitutional Review process,” he added.

The Commission has set up a website: www.yourconstitution.vg which provides more information on how to engage and submit suggestions.

We have a current constitution yet politicians go in Cabinet and make policies to challenge and or over ride the constitution...Look at what the constitution says about status, 10yrs, yet politicians get in cabinet and say no way, the constitution talking nonsense let us make it 10yrs. This was wrong over reaching and oppressive, yet politicians get no punishment, make them think they can do as they wish..So, it's the behaviour of politicians that causing all these problems and turned off..

True, Hon. Dr. Natalio Sajande Wheatley, and current Premier of the BVI, the people of this country input is necessary in the constitution review. But just talk for talk sake without submission to their views are a none starter.
However, the main focus on the majority of the people's mind is a financial issues, and also what changes needed to be made urgently towards riding us from the evil grip of past and probably ongoing mismanagement (unaccountable practice) of our finances by polititions.

It is clearly true that the BVI is experiencing a political civil war. It is clearly true that the UK has waited too long to respond. The UK rightfully have responded. Because they have, many politicians, and false religious leaders too, rather than admittance their false, have resorted to bad mouthing the Uk, the CoI, the governor of heavy handedness against our best interest towards independence (self determination).
Many of our people have not take it into consideration that living among us are a number of UK's citizens. Some of them are local as we local are. The UK have the rights to protect their constitutional rights, as do ours. The also must heard, and their opinion must also be respected.
I am in agreement with the UK. Good governance for all of the citizens of the British Virgin Islands cannot be compromised to suit ethnicity, and cultural diversity.
"Righteousness exualt a nation, sin (unrighteousness practices) is a reproach against any people", including the people of the British Virgin Islands.

This so-called constitution only works when it benefits some people, other than that, anything goes in the BVI. all You need is to have the right colour, Money or certain last Names. There is no hope for us: we have been raped by our oppressors, robbed and betrayed by our own, what more are You looking for.
