Premier strikes back, says No confidence motion was 'baseless attacks'
The Premier's address came as a special report made on Tuesday August 1, 2017, following the sitting of the House of Assembly (HoA) earlier that day when Hon Fahie had tabled the No Confidence Motion which unfortunately failed due to lack of support.
"Notwithstanding the baseless attacks by the Leader of the Opposition and his newly found Leader, we will stand firm," said the Premier in a televised speech.
“It is my duty to again to restate that vision and to show that the accusations levied against me and my Government are not only false as points of fact –more importantly, they demonstrate the willful refusal of Opposition to understand that this Government will never, ever abandon its vision,” he continued.
The Premier stated that it is very important that he respond, by separating the lies from the truth.
“I see the Honourable Member calling into question my integrity and my competence as Minister of Finance and more indirectly this Government’s commitment to carrying out the mandate of the people of this territory.”
He continued, “To me, nothing is more important. Nothing is more fundamental. Our vision has been presented before the people of this territory in general election campaigns dating back over twenty years. It has been restated in this House on innumerable occasions. Yet, despite the many times we have made our vision clear, our Honourable colleagues in Opposition seem unable to hear it…”
During his address, Hon Smith stated that the vision of the government is rooted in the belief that it is the duty of government to secure a prosperous future for the Virgin Islands by investing for the long term, creating a sound, accountable system of governance and allowing the strong values of our community to be the bedrock that binds us together.
Good governance, transparency and accountability
Hon Smith further stated that the allegations which addresses the ruling government’s good governance, transparency and accountability is “preposterous”.
“The party I lead came into being first and foremost to demand accountability in government spending. We were bound together in our shared outrage at the waste of precious administrations,” emphasized the Premier.

I know I going rally around Doc's team. A spiritual team and team Members can't go wrong. Stop worrying, people. Our Father and forefathers heard our cry and shouted -- "Let My People Go." Rise up, BVI; Rise Up. The People that know God shall do exploits. Don't weep, my people saith the God of our Ancestors. I am so happy now, you hear. That word came just in time before Emancipation. We good to go, man!
