Premier Smith welcomes The Costa Luminosa

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - On Wednesday, December 14, 2011, the Territory played host to the Italian ship Costa Luminosa making its inaugural call docked at the Cruise Pier in Road Town with the Premier officially welcoming the Captain.

According to a Government Information Service (GIS) press release, Premier and Minister for Tourism Dr. Hon. D. Orlando Smith, OBE presented a plaque in honour of the occasion.

In officially welcoming Captain Massimo Garbarino, his crew and passengers to the Territory, Premier Smith said, “We are pleased that the Costa Family are visiting,” adding, “We know that you will have an unforgettable experience here today.” The Premier received a commemorative plaque from Captain Garbarino who said “the best welcome for our Costa Family is the perfect weather conditions.”

Minister for Ports Hon. Mark Vanterpool was present as well as Government officials from the Premier´s Office, Ministry of Communications and Works, the BVI Tourist Board, BVI Ports Authority, and the cruise line´s local agent, Romney and Associates Consultants Ltd.

The Costa Luminosa, which means ‘bright’, will grace the Territory every week for the 2011-2012 tourist season.

Cruise tourism, as a sector within the tourism industry, contributes significantly to the economy of the Virgin Islands.
