ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has blasted Opposition Members for what he called mischief and spreading misinformation, following an Opposition press briefing where comments were made about an alleged antagonistic relationship between the Fahie Administration and the Governor.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, Opposition Leader, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) had told the media that he was concerned about the dialogue between the Premier and the Governor, Mr Augustus J.U. Jaspert.

Hon Penn expresses concerns

"This in itself is not healthy, it creates divisiveness in a time when we need more than ever unity, as it relates to tackling the issue of COVID-19... a Global Pandemic," Hon Penn said.

However, while Hon Penn did not specify what dialogue he was referring to, he said the COVID-19 era is a time when the Territory needs global partners and the Governor and Premier should sit down and chart a way forward.

"Someone needs to be the adult in the room, let us sit down and figure out a way forward in this Territory," he said.

Hon Penn also suggested that the Governor and the Premier should put their differences aside and decide the best possible solution for the Territory.

Meanwhile, Third District Representative Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) hinted that the COVID-19 update on Monday, August 25, 2020, was delayed due to a 'fight' which resulted in the delayed presentation from Hon Carvin Malone (AL), some minutes to midnight.

Unfortunate events - Premier Fahie

"It is unfortunate that in the midst of having to manage the many complex issues and situations relative to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the BVI, that I have to divert attention and focus to correct misinformation, mis-statements and mischief," Premier Fahie said in his Thursday, August 28, 2020, media statement.

"But I cannot let these untrue statements that are being circulated remain unanswered and to bury their roots in the public domain. I also must state that I am disappointed that some members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition are making deliberate efforts to fan these flames of misinformation, mis-statements and mischief, during this time of COVID-19," he said.

Hon Fraser had further suggested to the media that the Government's COVID-19 updates were not being presented by the Premier, Governor and Health Minister as a result of the same infighting.

"Most of you would recall... that those press conferences... it was all three people there. The Premier, the Governor and the Minister responsible for the subject. I know a little bit more about those three people but I wouldn't say it."

Disagreements not a fight - Premier Fahie

Hon Fahie hinted that while Cabinet meetings may have disagreements, there are no fights. "While the Government and the Opposition do not agree...we do not characterise these disagreements as a fight."

"Why then, are persons going out of their way to paint similar disagreements between the Governor and the Premier as a fight? Why are they trying to create fear, uncertainty and panic in the minds of the public?" he questioned.

Hon Fraser, adding to the rumour mill, also called for the Premier and Governor to end their friction, "They got their friction, it should not happen, it should stop, it needs to stop and if it doesn't stop I will continue to talk about it."

According to Premier Fahie, "for the record, as Premier, I have a good relationship with the Cabinet Members of the Territory which includes the Governor, the Cabinet Secretary, the Attorney General and all my Ministers."

WHy some people believe that only they can talk and they are the only ones correct? If anybody else says anything, it is either a lie or does not make sense. I hate this level of immaturity and tit for tat that I am seeing. Lawd, if it is not the governor then it is the opposition. Guess everybody should shut up and let a certain person alone speak and we all say " Yes, father, that is true" Tired of the nonsense. Different day same nonsense. Please we have a pandemic situation to deal with. Let's see some kind of cooperation and effective administration.

That is just the problem with you BVI landers. You hate to see another man winning. You people don’t lift up each other. You bring each other down. Besides you should know your fact before talking shit.i highly doubt your figures are correct. Stop listening to street gossip and coming on here feeding the reader with false info. It is people like you that will get man kill. You gossip to much false information . Why don’t you help the poor since you seem to know so much? The envy on this island is noting I have ever seen before. When you get barges I’m sure the premier will grant you the job. Until then stop making yourself look like a hater who is in agony because you don’t have boat or perhaps you do have boats but wasn’t granted the job. In otherwise ... find some other rich person (according to you) who was given gov contract to hate on.

I agree. The premier should have split the work between the local owners instead of one man getting all. I will say your figures are wrong . You have no idea what you are saying. When hiring private vessels prices per day depending on the job is not $3000. You mussy think you are shipping a damn container from the states? This is my problem. People like you coming on site talking pure gib! I say to you. Get your facts right and stop Mis leading the readers. Prices are negotiated based on tonnage etc.

So you rather the contract go to Police Commissioner friends ‘ boats instead of a local company ? The C barges are a home grown company on a 4 th generation cause they work hard and know the business. Stop being petty and tearing down your own !

I must commend the Hon. Premier for the manner in which he stood up for the rights of the people of this territory. The Premier was elected by the people and not the Governor and as such the Premier is suppose to work in the best interest of the people. If there is any issue that requires the input of the Governor then he shall consult with the Governor. If one should look at the other territories in the Caribbean where there is a Governor or a Governor General, you would hardly hear from either of them . For instance in St. Kitts, Grenada or Anguilla you would hear statements from the Prime Ministers or Chief Minister and not the Governor, or Governor Generals. We have a Governor here who feels that he was elected by the people and acts like an Executive President.

Hon. Penn acts as a juvenile and looks to to Governor for refuge. In Antigua we would say nothing go so. Furthermore there are certain functions that the Governor is responsible for and as such he shall consult with the Premier.. Hon Fraser is fighting a loosing battle along with Hon. Turnbull. It is about time their respective Districts to look for new representatives because the members have lost their directions.
