ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has slammed now Opposition Member, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) over statements that the Government of National Unity was selected as a result of a ‘coup’ in the Virgin Islands.

While Hon Malone was a guest on the August 11, 2022, episode of ‘The Narrative’ talk show with host Calistra Farrier on the VI and other current matters in the territory, he was asked about the state of politics in the VI.

He responded, “Right now it's been clouded with this Commission of Inquiry because, at the end of the day, you will recall that after the events of April 28 [2022] within a five-day [period], whether it's questionable or not, we were able to… form a coup, for lack of a better word.”

Calling inaccurate information a disservice to the general public, Dr Wheatley, while not naming the legislator, slammed the statements.

“I was highly disappointed recently to hear persons on the airwaves just last week saying that the current reform process is the product of a coup here in the Virgin Islands, that brought the Government of National Unity to power,” Dr Wheatley stated during a press conference today, August 26, 2022.

Coup statements 'blatantly false'- Dr Wheatley

Dr Wheatley continued, “This is blatantly false, and spreading such falsehoods is completely irresponsible and self-serving. To be clear, the Virgin Islands Party Congress in early May elected me the Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party. I am the leader of the Virgin Islands Party,” he said.

The Premier then detailed that elected members of the Virgin Islands Party, all of the elected members of the National Democratic Party and the elected members of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement then indicated they supported him as the leader of the Government of National Unity at its formation.

“No coup has occurred in the Virgin Islands and it is important that persons not spread such falsehoods, which is highly irresponsible, especially by persons in elected office,” he said.

With the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Opposition, along with the people, against direct rule by the United Kingdom (UK), the Government and Opposition announced a coalition government on May 4, 2022, with the hope of staving off UK direct rule over the findings of the 2021 Commission of Inquiry in the Virgin Islands.

As we are all aware, the most transparent and democratic procedure in this matter would involve a general election. Unfortunately, we are operating under 21st century colonial UK governance that lacks transparency in these democratic matters. Sowande justifies his stands as preservation of country. Yet many call it preservation of his ambition to sustain the legacy of the leadership his grandfather held and also a cowardly prideful act. The question is, what would our great and brave leaders of the past like Noel Lloyd label this all as? I don’t find that he has the caliber of the great ones of history. If you cannot fight for your liberty, for your freedom, you and your Doctorate Degree will always be less than. No matter where in the world you choose to live, the dark shadow of self preservation will be your friendly companion like those of Judas and the like.

You cannot visit nor call those under house arrest. It is not the Premier's fault that this situation is what it is. This is not Balsam Ghut we talking about.

Salty. Just turn him over to Piko Moff that’s his match.
He tried to cry on Facebook about what Picko said and absolutely no one paid him any attention.
He cries like the whimp he is.
Let him go take his cowpox vaccine

Carvin needs to shut the hell up. He's irrelevant and just trying to distract us. He needs to go do some work! All these Districts need some oversight, so start by bringing to the people the plan to get the potholes fixed in this place, and we can get lower electricity bills. How about he looks into those matters from talking smack out his head.

I think this is a VIP fight. Slow Wande needs to find another party to run under for the next election.

I don't know who COUP who, but we are one and you all need to get it together not fighting amongst yourselves because while you are fighting and being distracted, guess who will slip in without you not noticing them. Band together and think as one person before you get replaced by outsiders for sure. Once they are in, you all are OUT! They will NOT let go of the reigns once they get ahold of them. Haven't you learned from history? Don't allow it to repeat itself?

The UK’s signature divide and rule plan is working like a charm. Typically, the UK rule indirectly by setting up divisions among various local factions, and then choose a side who it holds indebted to it. The Guv and UK are kicking back, sipping tea and watching and enjoying the bloaks fight among themselves. What a ting!!! You don’t have to trust me. Just look at the history of colonialism around the globe.

This is the problem right here. The two of them belong to the same party but they airing their dirty laundry in public. In all my years growing up in a mainly 2 party country. This never happened. Where is the togethernes? When the new coalition govt was formed the new premier said Malone and Wheatley gave up their positions for the new govt to form. Whether this was true or not leave it that way. We were none the wiser. Work together until such time when VI P and NDP could come back on the scene. But no Malone had to go on the Opposition clearly indicating that all was not as it seemed. Now he gone on radio talking about a coup. Wheatley leave him alone. We dont want no tit for tat. We have way bigger issues to deal with. Stay focused and let's get through these rough patches. Roads, schools, and all the rest stuff need to be on the front burner right now.

There was no stipulation that they had to be removed .That was a choice and political strategy. Hon Malone remains one of the most competent, strategic members who navigated the Territory through a challenging time . They don't belong to the same party. The Premier is VIP for 3 years vs Hon. Malone for 20 plus years. They were removed because they posed the biggest threat to power. They will try to postpone the vote for as long as possible.
