ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- [British] Virgin Islands (VI) basketball player and former Los Angeles Lakers’ D’Moi M. Hodge has been hailed by the Premier of the territory for his recent show of commitment to the VI in the 2024 King of the Courts Caribbean Basketball Championships despite mourning the loss of his father Courtney Parsons Hodge aka ‘Coco’.

Hodge played for Team Tola and helped the team reach the final where they lost to the defending champions, US Virgin Islands (USVI), who they had beaten in the group stage.

59-year-old Parsons Hodge died in an accident involving an excavator at Paraquita Bay, Tortola on April 3, 2024.

Hodge played with ‘heart & passion’

Premier Wheatley, speaking at the Continuation of the Ninth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on April 9, 2024, disclosed that Hodge landed in the territory to play for Team Tola on the same day his father died and had to arrive to such tragic news.

“And that could not have been easy. And despite that, that young man, despite the pain he was going through, I mean none of us would want to be in that position, but he made a commitment to represent the BVI that he loves, and despite his loss he represented us and represented us well, played hard, gave it his all.

“I want to salute him for representing the BVI and playing with such heart and passion. Of course, we did not get the ultimate result that we wanted, in terms of winning the championship, but I am proud of those young men. They played well, and of course, we had beaten the USVI in the first game but they got us in the second game, which just happened to be the title game.”

Premier Wheatley said he was impressed with the drive and passion displayed by Team Tola and “I just want to salute D’Moi and I want to salute every single player on the team.”

Dauria Alexander’s death ‘heartbreaking’

Among the condolences sent out was to the family of 10-year-old Dauria Alexander, who died by drowning at Savannah Bay on Virgin Gorda on March 31, 2024,

Dr Wheatley said it was heartbreaking to hear about a young girl, who had not even gotten the opportunity to experience life, die.

    Well said the honorable premier.
Not much young man could have played their heart out like that if a close relative of theirs had passed, he moment you arrived to your home country. Imagine D'moi didn't get the opportunity to embrace with him for the last time.

Please do not listen to the 15 year old or those with 15 year old mentality that blogs covertly. We love us some D'Moi. Of course we were hoping to win the Tournament, but D'Moi was only one member on the team.

D’moi Hodge, represented the (British) Virgin Islands well, though playing with a heavy heart, playing with heart, passion and commitment , demonstrating uncommon class and patriotism. D’moi, keep your head high, stay strong. Deepest condolences on the passing of your father, Courtney Parsons Hodge.

To Stealth, good vibes, starting with getting the territory’s official/legal name correct. D’Moi, boi, keep your head up.
