ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - After eleven months in office and effective January 23, 2020, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has taken time off from his job and assumed personal leave until January 28, 2020.

As such, At-Large Representative and current Deputy Premier, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has taken on the role of acting Premier until Hon Fahie returns in the new week.

According to a release from the Government Information Service, with Premier Fahie being away, Hon Malone’s appointment is in accordance with Section 55 (1) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007.

It states, “If the Premier is expected to be absent from the Virgin Islands for more than forty-eight hours, the Governor shall authorise the Deputy Premier to perform the functions of the office of Premier; and the Governor shall revoke this authority on the return to the Virgin Islands of the Premier.”

Hon Malone was sworn in by His Excellency the Governor Mr Augustus J. U. Jaspert acting in accordance with Section 52 (2) of the Constitution of the Virgin Islands as Deputy Premier for a period of three months with effect from December 17, 2019.

His term follows the rotation of Ministers of Government to serve as Deputy Premier for a period of three months, a move that Premier Fahie called ‘unconventional’ under his Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government.

A permanent Deputy Premier is expected to be named in March when the rotation initiative comes to an end.

Premier Andrew A. Fahie, D-1 and MoF, has been racing bud speed ahead since taking the VI governing helm on 26 Feb 2019. He deserves some well-needed rest and recuperation (R&R). This R&R is a prescription for both his personal health and the health of the nation, resulting from political fatigue, a condition similar to war. Sir Winston Churchill, former UK PM and war veteran, quipped that politics is worst than war. That is debatable. Nonetheless, Hopefully, Premier Fahie takes the down time, RR, to refuel, reflect, replan, refocus reassess the challenging path forward..........etc.

The Premier had to take time to distress and get his faculties back in order, there is no easy task in carrying/running a Country. The weight of the Country is on his back, all eyes and ears is on him 24/7, I don’t think he has gotten a goods night sleep since he took office. Yes, he deserve to take some PERSONAL time off. Barak Obama went into office with no gray hair and left the White House with a head covered in gray hair.
