Premier Fahie jets off on personal leave
As such, At-Large Representative and current Deputy Premier, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has taken on the role of acting Premier until Hon Fahie returns in the new week.
According to a release from the Government Information Service, with Premier Fahie being away, Hon Malone’s appointment is in accordance with Section 55 (1) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007.
It states, “If the Premier is expected to be absent from the Virgin Islands for more than forty-eight hours, the Governor shall authorise the Deputy Premier to perform the functions of the office of Premier; and the Governor shall revoke this authority on the return to the Virgin Islands of the Premier.”
Hon Malone was sworn in by His Excellency the Governor Mr Augustus J. U. Jaspert acting in accordance with Section 52 (2) of the Constitution of the Virgin Islands as Deputy Premier for a period of three months with effect from December 17, 2019.
His term follows the rotation of Ministers of Government to serve as Deputy Premier for a period of three months, a move that Premier Fahie called ‘unconventional’ under his Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government.
A permanent Deputy Premier is expected to be named in March when the rotation initiative comes to an end.
