ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) was forced to clear the air after ZBVI News Director, Mr Zan Lewis implied that the Premier may not have been satisfied with the Government's COVID-19 media communication strategy.

"Premier, I'm getting the feeling that because of the many reports government has been making to the country in the absence of the media, I'm getting the feeling that you are not so satisfied in terms of how government had been getting this information out to the public," Lewis asked.

Mr Lewis was at the time speaking during the question and answer segment of a COVID-19 press conference at the conference room of the Office of the House of Assembly (HoA) on May 12, 2020.

The radio broadcaster further asserted there were growing concerns because of a 'lack of information' given to the media with regards to the first COVID-19 death in the territory, and the circumstances surrounding the death.

'Ask me whatever you want'- Premier Fahie to media

The Premier, in responding to the question said, "You could ask me whatever you want... we have enough doctors here to look after that feeling you have because you're off. So we will prescribe some kind of medication for you because that feeling is off.

"Anyone who can say we have not been giving out information has to be someone inside, who was inside the curfew without a radio, TV, Phone or anything at all, and then came back out since this last curfew open," Hon Fahie responded.

According to the Premier, so much information was forthcoming from the Government it became overwhelming for some people, to which Mr Lewis implied that information was not forthcoming specifically to the media.

"Now that you're saying to the media, that's not totally true either," the Premier indicated, with Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) adding that the claim was not true at all.

Gov't has always been engaging media houses- Premier

According to Hon Fahie, "Well, I don't want to say it is not true at all, because that would be implying that he [Zan Lewis] is lying and he is not a liar,' the Premier said.

"What I'm saying Zan is that you got a one on one interview with me in my office, and you asked me everything that was on your mind."

The Premier further indicated that his government has never shunned the media and has been speaking to various media houses, "I want to make it clear because then things go out with the wrong impression that we trying to hide something," he said.

'A lie from the pits of hell'

Amidst more concerns from Lewis that questions had to be submitted ahead of the press conference, the Premier said it was the anticipation that some questions would need research hence the request.

He noted; however, that his team was not prepped and any questions posed from the media at the press conference would be answered.

“I live in the BVI and I hear a lot of things and there are people saying that we trying to hide things with COVID-19 and that thing is not so, it is a lie from the pits of hell. Whatever we know, when we know it, we tell the public.

“You can’t hide this because the more information the public has the more safe we can keep you,” Premier Fahie further said.

I’m not big on conspiracy theories but if you don’t know that the government is corrupt on every level from your local government to the Supreme Courts then God bless you. You’re walking around with rose colored glasses as the saying goes.

All these people whose wearing mask will eventually fall sick, they're weakening their own immune systems on a daily, killing there body breathing in stale air over and over I’m giving y’all less than a year, doctors only wear mask when their dealing with patients because they don’t want to drool on a open wound that they’re operating on... Y’all killing y’all damn selves in the name of safety especially those who drive with it on and their windows all the way up lol

Repeating the garbage spewed by Butta.. only a JA will wear a mask to the point where it incapacitates their ability to breathe effectively. You wear a mask for the same reason the Drs wear it; to ensure you dont infect others. The problem is there are many people who are asymptomatic carriers of the virus and they can infect others unknowingly. So the guidelines to wear mask simply treats everyone as a carrier to avoid further spreading the disease. These are all attempts to flatten the curve. Take off the mask periodically to get fresh air and put it on whenever you are around crowded areas. Research Rashid Butta and you will learn more about this political foot stool.

Lol here goes another fool, buh a doctor wears a mask to not infect ppl you sound so dumb, a virus and a bacteria is two different things a mask can’t save you from a virus dimbwit all your doing is killing your immune system by breathing in that same air over an over smh but do what makes you feel safe

When we treat patients who have compromised immune systems, such as persons with HIV and AIDS, we are putting that person at risk for infection, so we wear a mask to protect our patients. I don't know where you got your medical training from to bring that foolish argument to me. We wear a mask firsts to not transfer any pathogens from ourselves to the patient and second to protect ourselves from possible pathogens that the patient may be carrying. Call any doctor and ask them if you need further clarification.

How is the air that is in the mask being recycled? You calling the person a dimwit! You are wearing a mask for a short period of time. You go home you take it off, go to the balcony of your apartment and get fresh air. The poster clearly stated that you could take the mask off when you are not in a crowded place to get fresh air. So how are you breathing the same air over and over unless the mask you have is stapped onto your face so tightly that it traps the air that you are breathing? It this is the case, your least concern should be killing your immune system because you will be dead within a matter of minutes from suffocation. You are not making much sense here. A mask when worn properly can be effective in stopping the spread of a contagion.

Explain how a mask can stop the spread of a bacteria but not a virus. This is an interesting concept. Care to elaborate a bit?

They said they want to depopulate so weakening your immune system is key. These mask are going to make a person easier to get sick.

Unfortunately this is what happens when a looter is not arrested, charged and prosecuted. That looter feels protected and has loyalty to their protectors to the point where even if it is red the looter would refuse to see it because of that looter’s affiliation. Very sad.

Zan like he had the Premier on the back foot with that googly. Or swinging for the fences with his eyes closed at 90mph curve ball. He asked the question in a roundabout way to get to his location. The importance of the media when it comes to matters of transparency especially when it comes to public health and 24 hour lockdowns that take away people's freedoms. People want to know why? Why would the Premier want to prescribe a medication to Zan? Sounds a bit defensive to me.

The absence of the media has been quite puzzling and disturbing as the media was needed to get more information and clear up any uncertainties. I found that there was not enough information given on the young lady who passed and what protocols were used and if or why did they fail. Then just basic information like gender, age, possible means of contraction was not forthcoming in some of the cases. Not good.

Zan isn't lying. This was the first press conference since March despite a flurry of so called press releases and there are reports thats many questions from the media were not answered. After those so called press releases, where the media were not allowed to be present or ask questions, thinking people were left with more unaddressed concerns and questions than they had vefore the so called press release, had the press been allowed to ask questions, this wouldn't had been the case.

Moreover, the press releases were not full of information, it was 95% nothingness, fluff and repetition and 5% pertinent information as to the government's plans to move forward.

The Government did poorly yesterday. The way the questions were answered was mediocre to say the least. One of the things that defines a Government or anyone in authority is their ability to address the media and answer probing questions. A well informed official always remain calm rather than going on the defense. The Government was very defensive yesterday and deserves a C- for its performance. I challenge anyone to look at the way UK Politicians address the UK media during their daily Covid-19 briefings. There is no comparison
