ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Premier and Finance Minister Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith in delivering his government’s budget earlier today, November 15, 2012 has announced, what he termed as relief for the people of the Virgin Islands, an exemption of the fuel surcharges on electricity bills for residential homes for the two months ahead.

Hon. Smith said earlier, “Honourable Members [of the House of Assembly] would have all heard their constituents lament on the high electricity bills and especially the fuel variation charge component of those bills.”

He noted that in the prevailing economic conditions those cries have become greater.

The Premier further stated that bearing this and other factors in mind “my government has been examining ways by which we can bring relief to our people, especially at this time when their disposable income is at its lowest”.

“In response to this,” he said, “I am pleased to announce that the government of the Virgin Islands will exceptionally exempt all residential homes from the fuel surcharge on their electricity bill for the month of December of this year and January of 2013.”

He further disclosed that this would effectively reduce the fuel variation charge “by over 8% to each home for 2012 and 2013.”

Earlier the Premier announced a budget of $298.7M for the fiscal year 2013 in the House of Assembly.

Can you remember when gas for your car was a $1 a gallon or less? Well, the basic charge for electricity has not changed since then. The price of oil has gone up enormously and the BVIEC cover that with the fuel surcharge. The unit rate is quite unrealistic. All Govt charges should have increased over the years, at least with the level of inflation (land taxes, licences, water, etc) but have been kept unrealistically low. Your electric bill is no higher than it would have been had increases been applied over the years.
