Pre-Valentine’s Domino comp. winners donate prize to ‘lucky couple’!
Mr Derrick R. Varlack, Proprietor of Right Mix Sports bar said he had made a commitment that if he and his daughter had won the competition they would donate the prize to another couple.
It seems as though persons were not too pleased that Mr Varlack and daughter had won since he, Mr Varlack, was actually the organisor of the tournament. The businessman said, however, that those persons did not need to worry as he is a man of his word.
In a statement issued to Virgin Islands News Online, Mr Varlack said, “I need to first apologise for playing in the tournament, it was never my intention to play.” He explained that on the night of the tournament one team that had registered was a no show and “that made the number of teams an odd number and I was told by the other teams to compete and I made it perfectly clear that if I won any prize that I was going to give it to a lucky couple,” stated Mr Varlack.
He said that when he first thought about the tournament he was hoping for it to be a “fun thing” for families and loved ones. “For some reason people who didn’t compete made it to be a bad thing but you can blame me for competing.”
The 'lucky couple' has not been disclosed.
Nevertheless, Mr Varlack said he was happy that he and daughter had fun playing together. “Because winning for me wasn’t that much fun, the fun part was playing with my daughter and to hear her say that was the good part for her as well. I love you baby, happy Valentine’s Day.”
Mr Varlack, on behalf of himself and staff of Rite Mix Sports Bar, extends happy Valentine’s Day greetings to all the couples that competed. “It was a wonderful weekend. I hope you had as much fun as me. Happy Valentine’s Day to all.”
The father and daughter combination of Derrick and Sherryann Varlack chalked up the win in the first annual couple’s only pre-Valentine’s domino tournament held at Right Mix Sports Bar and Lounge on February 9 and 10, 2013.
The duo won by a final margin of 708-675 against second prize winners, Steve and Monique George who won a weekend trip for two to St Maarten. The first place winners secured a trip for two on a Caribbean cruise, which will of course be generously donated to another couple.
Other winners in the competition included 3rd place winners Denny Hodge and Christine Roberts (weekend at Scrub Island); 4th place winners Sandra Massicotte and Andrew Stoutt (weekend at Nail Bay); 5th place winners Morris Wattley and daughter ($200) and 6th place winners Rhonda Thomas and Ephraim Gordon ($100).
The competition attracted a total of ten teams.
