ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands will experience possible rainfall today, September 24, 2020, with a high surf advisory in effect according to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM).

The forecast today is cloudy with a 70 per cent or a high chance of showers and a 60 per cent or a moderate chance of thunderstorms.

Total rainfall for the forecast period is expected at 10 to 20 mm or 0.40 to 0.80 inch and a surface trough will see unsettled conditions mainly today where cloudy periods with showers are anticipated during its passage.

“A frontal boundary in the vicinity of Hispaniola and moving east will see an increase in these conditions for the islands tonight. Notwithstanding the wind will remain on the lower side due to a very slack pressure gradient, long period swells resulting in dangerous breaking surfs will continue to invade mainly the northern coastlines,” the DDM says.

The Weather forecast for tonight is cloudy with showers and a high chance of thunderstorms with winds Southeast to east-southeast becoming more easterly by this evening with speeds ranging from 7 to 22 km/h or 4 to 12 knots with calm or variable spells.

Seas tonight will be 1.5 to 2.1 metres or 5 to 7 feet with northerly swells of 1.5 to 2.1 metres or 5 to 7 feet with the higher heights mainly for the northern coastal waters of the Atlantic with a high surf advisory in effect.
