'Positively represent us out there'- Lettsome-Tye to youths on social media during lockdown
Cognisant of the issues that may arise, Acting Director of Youth Affairs and Sports Mrs Brenda Lettsome-Tye wants these youngsters to “positively represent us out there,” in the virtual world.
“Why not share your knowledge and skill with your fellow youth, start a group, a club or a following and maybe continue with exhibitions and tournaments after the curfew ends. We just ask that you only do positive challenges and that you hashtag the BVI flag and tag us @DYASBVI. Platforms such as TikTok, Facebook LIVE and Instagram TV should be used to share skills in an entertaining way,” she said through a press release on Tuesday, April 7, 2020.
We rely heavily on social media
“We here in the BVI are relying heavily on social media to do business, educating each other and communicate, and no one knows how to use social media better than our youth. They are the experts,” Mrs Lettsome-Tye added.
She then implored the young people to take the time out to “find yourself, develop a skill, take advantage of the many free lessons, tours, music concerts that are available online.”
The Director pointed to a few local business persons such as Tara K. Stoutt of JB’s Kitchen, Felicia Tonge-Fenton of Evolution Hair & Nail Salon and Brent D. Hoyte of Home Grown Studios who are utilising the curfew to produce informative videos to assist others in cooking, style hair and to be generally entertained.
She praised these persons for their work and their attempts to keep others positive despite the uncertainty and curfew, which will officially end on April 16, 2020, but is expected to be extended to April 19, 2020.
