‘Ports Project needs Commission of Inquiry’ – Donald E. De Castro
He made this clear on his evening radio programme ‘The Hot Seat’ last night August 13, 2014 on ZBVI 780AM.
“We just had a debate in the House of Assembly on the Public Accounts committee report on the cruise ship pier and land side [project],” he said. “At the end the Representative for the Second District [Hon J. Alvin Christopher] said something very important…if you have nothing to hide, then a Commission of Inquiry will prove you to be right,” he said.
“Why is it that this Government does not want to support a Commission of Inquiry? The only person that can call a Commission of Inquiry is the Governor. That was made clear but he can be asked and the Government can [either] support the asking or they can object,” he said.
“I have always been under the impression and want to believe that once you have nothing to hide you should not have to worry about the inquiry. It’s got to be something fishy somewhere along the line why they do not want a Commission of Inquiry,” he said.
“The more I hear and the more I talk to people in the know the more I am convinced that our children and grandchildren will have a high price to pay [for this project]. It is important to understand that when you make mistakes you should pay for it. But we should not make mistakes knowingly that our children and grandchildren will have to pay for,” he said.
He said that the proposal that citizens of the Territory help pay for the landside development is an attempt to pull the wool over people’s eyes. “If it were that important why wasn’t that approach taken from the beginning?” asked De Castro.
“It is impossible to understand why this Government is refusing to listen to the people on this issue. This is a disaster to this Territory and I am more than happy that this debate took place. At least people will be able to understand what is going on,” he said.
