ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A portion of Main Street, from the foot of Joe’s Hill Road to Flemming Street will soon be converted to accommodate two-way traffic, Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) has informed.

In his statement at the Continuation of the Third Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on Thursday, September 7, 2023, Honourable Rymer said the purpose of this change is to ease the flow of traffic at the roundabout as well as at the intersection of the Waterfront Drive and the Walter James Francis Drive.

He said, “What we want to introduce by the end of the fourth quarter is an upgrade that we believe will enhance our traffic flow and reduce the congestion. We will seek to convert only the section of Main Street between the foot of Joe’s Hill by the Road Town Methodist Cemetery to the intersection of Main Street and Flemming Street into two-way traffic. The rest of Main Street, starting at the same intersection of Flemming Street to Customs Road intersection in the vicinity of the Commercial Court building, will remain a one-way heading in the westerly direction.”

Minister aware Main St is 'narrow'

Honourable Rymer also stated that he is aware of the Main Street Road and the fact that it is more narrow than most roads, but reassured the public that the necessary precautions will be taken to keep the road safe for pedestrians and motorists.

Honourable Rymer said, “This new outlet being created, by a conservative estimate, we believe that the traffic congestion will be reduced by at least 35 per cent. I have experienced the congestion and can recognise the immediate benefits that this upgrade to our traffic flow will bring to our motorists.”

He added, “We recognise the constraint of Main Street generally and know that it is not as wide as other roads. As a result, we will additionally prohibit large trucks from traversing Main Street and will require them to utilise other roads available. I have requested of the Public Works Department to develop designs for implementation of this upgrade to see how best we can fit in sidewalks along this segment of the road to ensure the safety of pedestrians.”

That road is too small for 2-way traffic, it can barely hold 1-way traffic well. That means there can be NO PARKING at all on this street because it will be more of a traffic jam than before. Senseless move to do this.

I am assuming that no parking will be allowed on that street.

I hope no parking on the the road will be implemented given traffic in both directions need to be accommodated.

The merging lane by the stop lights on the waterfront needs to be dealt with. Also people not using the roundabout properly.

This is an excellent idea. Also make the little stretch of road off the highway just across from Nagico area in to Rebublic & First Bank a two way so people do not have to go all the way up the road to come around. Or have to go all the way down the road to come back up.

I second this motion however it can only work if they stop people from parking along the roadside so there is ample space.

Put the traffic back how it was
    2 ways into town
    2 ways out of town

This one way in and one way out if not fully functional as a matter of fact the Government took that bold step without the voice of the people and that is call communism and dictatorship

I really like what VIP Government did during the covid lockdown implementing the traffic turn around in Road Town as well the shuttle bus service. They all must be commended. Just a few more tweaks and it will work extremely better than it is already working.

Please put up plenty more traffic signs all around town to clearly show what are one way & what are two way streets because as a visitor driving in the town it was not clear and this is the plea of many visitors. Let's save lives and avoid accidents.

Too much vehicles meet at the round-about. That needs rethinking please. Just take some time and sit around to observe that traffic Mr Minister and see how effective it is.

It is simple yet complex. Get rid of the roundabout is the simple part. The complex part is roundabouts are British things so they will have to fit the Mr. Know it all Governor and his UK Officials to get rid of the roundabout.

The challenge is drivers need to learn to use the round about properly. Places with more cars don't have round about challenges (they work). Uneducated drivers remain our problem.

The only problem with the roundabout is that it is too big for the area where it resides.

It will never work because some of us have no respect for the laws and will continue to park on the road. It will be a disaster.
Until we create a community of law abiding citizens we will never have anything working as it should. It saddens me everyday to see the kind of people we have become - no pride, disrespectful, quick to anger and overall don’t care attitude. It’s all about self.

Great Idea. This is good. I will also like to see a right turn from the high way heading East into that street where Western Union and first bank is heading to Noel Lloyd park and banco. this will also ease traffic from the round about..

Bad idea. Too many cars park there. Families with kids walk on the road. No real sidewalks to accommodate walkers. Someone will get hurt.

Ppl still parking up in front of Shabazz and doing all kinda stupidness waterfront and he worried about main street. The first changes made are not working efficiently. He obviously have too much time on his hands.
Suggestion. Instead of making it 2 way make it go one direction for a certain time of day and the other for a next. Or 2 way for a short period of the day.
.......All this traffic turn around and no kind of solutions on parking.

The change of the traffic patterns in Road Town coincident with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has created its own new plague of traffic problems — IT DOES NOT WORK!!!
Some people talk about problems at the roundabout particularly, suggesting that many drivers use it incorrectly. But it just seems improperly designed, made worse by having squeezed two lanes in a space made for one.
Until proper traffic design is done for Roadtown, CHANGE THE TRAFFIC FLOW BACK TO HOW IT WAS. This new plan is a bad idea which will no doubt just make things worse.

It’s high time we addressed our island's road challenges in the BVI. With the increasing number of vehicles on our small island, we urgently need proper engineering for our roadways. Let's hire a reputable company to design and construct better roads once and for all!

What we desperately require is a comprehensive road infrastructure plan. This should include proper signage, well-functioning stop lights, and the use of appropriate road marking materials. No more temporary solutions like house paint that washes away after a couple of showers. It's time to invest our hard-earned tax dollars where we can truly observe and enjoy the benefits.

Moreover, governmental intervention is indispensable in establishing a clear regulation with regards to right-handed vehicles. it’s either left-hand or right-hand driving, the law must decide. It cannot be both!

Get the taxi drivers to stop waiting for passengers near the round about. They are a menance to motorist, blocking up the road every day like they have more rights than anyone else.
