KINGSTON, Jamaica, WI- Virgin Islands News Online’s correspondence in Jamaica has confirmed that the winds of change reached Jamaica.

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has been declared winner of the 2016 General Elections after unseating the People's National Party (PNP) in the polls of February 25, 2016.

It means that Prime Minister Portia L. Simpson-Miller or ‘Sister’ P or ‘Mama P’ as she is affectionally known will no longer be the Prime Minister of that country where she was the first woman to serve in that post.

The PNP lost the election 30-33 in the 63-seat House of Representatives.

JLP party leader Andrew M. Holness arrived at the party's Belmont Road headquarters where he was greeted by a large and jubilant crowd of party supporters and gave his victory speech.

Holness, who defeated the PNP's Patrick Roberts to retain his St Andrew West Central seat, will be joined in Parliament by his wife Juliet, who defeated Imani Duncan - Price to secure the St Andrew East Rural constituency.

This has also made history, to have a husband and wife pair in the Jamaica Parliament.

According to our affiliate newspaper. the Jamaica Gleaner, the PNP's Deputy General Secretary Julian Robinson said, "We knew a number of seats were close but we obviously never expected to lose that many."

"We knew there were some marginal but we expected to win some of the marginal," he added.

The PNP leadership conceded shortly in front of a small, sombre crowd at the party's Old Hope Road headquarters.

Winds of changes over the past two years in the Caribbean

Those who had a government change included Anguilla, Bermuda, St Martin, St Kitts-Nevis, United States Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St Lucia, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.

However, three governments have held on to power within the past year, including the Virgin Islands, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

I feel very bad for my country, but the people have spoken. They have made their choice, however wrong.
Now for the young men, be prepared to die from the guns of the police and soldiers. To the parents of young men across Jamaica, be prepared for more Tivoli-style killings.

Good luck Prime Minister elect Mr. Holness and all the best in your new job, clearly accepting it with the knowledge that you will be there to serve all the people of the country despite party loyalists, religious belief, straight gays and everyone in-between!

It's joke you making as many dont even want you to talk too hard in you own country my friend from the Green Valley in SKB said you can call Central, Jamdown and the truth is most if not all just came through just about last year and they already have jobs and good one to that and almost all the rented houses in that area are full of them. She said at sometime or the other we all migrate for many reasons but when it comes to freedom of speech know where when and how to use such. She said she also believe most of the killing, stealing, breakins in cars, businesses and homes and other crimanal activities may be linked to them with the help of some locals.
i am glad for the change aspower gets to these leader head too fast and they always crying out that they are for the poor and the poor only gets poorer when they all take office.

Jamaican has spoken; it elected JLP with a razor thin lead over PNP (33-30) to lead Jamsica out the economic abyss. It will be a tough challenge that cannot be completed in one term but the foundation must be laid, course charted and sacrifices made to get out the deep hole. Jamaica has many challenges ahead 1) skyrocketing cost living, 2) anemic economic growth, 3)rising crime, 4) high debt to GDP ratio(122), 5)brain/skill drain, 6)standard of living and quality of life, 7) revival of manufacturing, 8) purchasing power parity, 9)fraying social fabric........etc. Where does Jsmaica start? First things first. Pick the low hanging fruit and effectively planned the longer term needs.

This election crisis seems LONG from over...now the JLP want to go after two more PNP seats...this likely to be followed by the PNP going after 3 to 4 JLP seats..
