Politicians to swim to raise funds for Makos
“The Club needs money to pay Prospect Reef for the use of the pool, to cover the costs of equipment and to have money in reserve to meet the expense of traveling overseas to regional swim meets such as the OECS championship in November,” co-organizer of the Meet and Eat, Pat Archibald-Bowers said in a press release.
“Several politicians, from both the district and the territorial races, have already signed up and more are expected to get back to us over the next couple of days,” she added. Independent candidates and politicians from all the major parties have been invited and are expected to swim in at least two races.
“The politicians’ races will be fun events but the Makos members will also demonstrate the various strokes they are learning and race against each other,” explains co-organizer, Julia Dawson. The $25 tickets for the Eat and Meet include a traditional Virgin Islands breakfast with bush tea. Tickets can be purchased from Makos Swim Club group members, at Maria’s By the Sea and by contacting the Swim Club at makos.sc@gmail.com.
The Makos Swim Club was started in 2009 with just a few members but now has more than twenty children enrolled. Since the Club started, its members have competed in the annual OECS Swim Championships and have also attended swim camp at the Nova Southeastern Aquatic Centre in Florida. Two of the Club’s swimmers, Elinah and Amarah Phillip, competed and medalled at the 20th Annual OECS Swim Championships in St. Lucia in 2010 and the Club is hoping to send more swimmers to this year’s event scheduled to be held in St. Lucia next month.
