FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI- Commenting that it is “really serious out there”, former Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA) Mr Julian Willock has alleged that a young lady who was in need of something to eat and reached out to a politician for help was “blocked”.

Mr Willock made the allegations while a guest on Tola Radio VI’s Da Morning Braff Show with host Rosemary Cindy Rosan on August 25, 2023.

The community-minded businessman was on the show to promote a back-to-school event he had organised in the Third District in collaboration with Ms Kishma P. Forbes of Virgin Islands School and Office Supplies.

‘I keep encouraging people to get off government’s tits’- Cindy

Ms Rosan commended the initiative and noted that people should become less dependent on the government.

“And another thing I like about all of this, I keep encouraging people to get off of the government’s tits. Remove themselves from Governments. Be independent. Take that chokehold that the government have around our necks where they can tell us yes, no or turn us into beggars, and do stuff for ourselves,” Rosan said.

Politician ‘blocked’ young lady- Willock

Willock responded that the reality is the Government can’t do everything.

“The government’s coffers are limited and remember the public is saying to me every time they go to the politicians for help all they are being told is they [politicians] don’t have any assistance grants.

“One young lady told me yesterday she was hungry, she reached out to a politician, he blocked her. it’s really serious out there,” Willock lamented.

Mr Willock did not disclose the identity of the politician or whether it was a District Representative or Territorial At Large Representative.

NO THEY DID NOT!! Those people are voted in by the people to represent us as we all can not fit on the leadership stage!! If the people need help politicians are obligated to be the loudest voices.

When someone needs help give it to them rather than they come out of a desperate situation KNOWING how little the society cares for them. Then after turning up our nose some of us we get on our high horses demanding those people be arrested for a long list of victimless "crimes" people turn to. Recall all those bars? The bartenders sell poison every night the rule book says its alright.

Your comment is so ignorant, i beg to believe anything other than your retarded. Who cares if anyone voted them in. Politicians are elected by the people to represent the will of the county, not one personal’s need. This people in need should account the appropriate department to get assistance with securing food. Perhaps they need a 2nd job and to readjust their budget to meet the realities of their life vs their current lifestyle.

"Politicians are elected by the people to represent the will of the county,"

NO politicians are elected BY THE PEOPLE for the THE PEOPLE. There is no point in democracy if you have zero influence, after they are voted in REPRESENTATIVES must remain sensitive to the will AND NEEDS of the PEOPLE. You might as well go serve the KING.

I see you want us to live in an upside down governmental system where citizens serve the government and not the other way around. Government by definition should benefit the people. The crown is established by righteousness.

Your comment is so ignorant because you assume every government must function according to your definition, the modern definition of government which marginalizes the individual.

Your definition of "country" is the same as a corporation..... SCARY!!!

I voted. This is the VI, what the people of the VI decide upon is what should be implemented.

We can build an airport but without the ground control/air traffic INDIVIDUALS the whole thing is a waste.

Golden sidewalks for the country and poverty for the people right??? I think calling someone ignorant is probably because YOU have enough.... if YOU did not have enough would you tell yourself to get a second job or go to your well to do friends for help?????

What happens when you have no friends as the lady and its not food BUT CASH you need to pay for your living expense???

You probably wouldnt give a beggar food if they were starving, and rationalize it by saying they would buy drug with the food, that's your & many people's mentality.

Id happily be a retard than live without a heart & forget my humanity.

Give a man a fish he can eat for a fay, teach a man to fish he could eat for a lifetime. Government should create opportunities and not give hand outs.

Get off of government tits! District councils can help. We can manage a good portion of district needs through them. Ask Gov/District Reps. to create councils and provide them with sufficient powers to be useful particularly for generating revenue.

If district representatives had not so thoroughly abused the system they would still have an allowance to give to those in need.

Not true. The system was never abused like being portrayed. There are those current elected officials who did not want the funds to help the people so they gladly allowed the recommendations to eliminate it to be approved without resistance.

Not true , have you not read about the abuse of funds?? Car repairs, car battery , tires , credit card bills paid, phone bills paid, college fees for some who never went to college and so much more.

You can tell if someone is really in need or just coming to you regularly because they want to keep their money and use the government. When I run into people outside the store who say they are hungry, I tell them to wait right here, and I will go inside to buy a plate of food and a drink. If they say they want the money so they can buy what they want, then they are full of crap and I say forget it. A true hungry person would be very happy to get the food.

Family support network shut down? why she had to go beg a politician for food? Sound like anancy story to me. Come out of the habit of begging politicians and demand systems that work be put in place to help the people in need.

Nothing wrong asking politicians, FSN, or any entity for assistance. The main factor is to ensure accountability and avoid abuse like what happened when she & Damion went with the public's money to save his house & now the rest is history & so is Damion.

This young lady could have simply be directed to Social Development for assistance. The HOA assistance given to the department to help those that actually need it.

The only problem with many of those victimless crimes by the way is the fact that the authorities refuse to regulate them causing what we know to be crime and disputes that can not be legally settled.

The unregulated professions which are purposely kept unregulated thus become incubators for violence or excuses for extreme tyrannical repression - think SINGAPORE

There is never a victimless crime it's either the person himself/herself or someone else.

One thing about the former Premier was he really cared for people especially the poor, needy, and elderly. He ensured systems were place to help them.

BVI PEOPLE WAKE UP! The Governor and UK is intentionally trying to force the implementation of policies to rule the BVI people through their predetermined COI & pre-authored COI recommendations to turn the BVI into a heartless country where there will only have the haves and the haves not. Of course, their kind will be among the haves.

These people who are insisting that a politician's job is to "help them" are part of the reasons why this place is the way it is. A politician's job in my opinion is to help as many people as possible to become self sufficient. A culture of asking politicians for money was created and the politician would give with the expectation of being re-elected. I hope that we can break that cycle.
