ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has said it successfully recovered three prohibited firearms from two separate incidents this week.

According to the RVIPF in a press release today, June 28, 2024, on Monday, June 24, 2024, officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, acting on specific intelligence, attempted to stop the driver of a Kia Soul in the Johnsons Ghut area.

"Upon seeing the officers, the driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot to evade capture. Enquiries continue toward identifying and locating the driver," the RVIPF stated.

During a subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle, officers discovered two high-powered, prohibited firearms: a Micro Draco 7.62 calibre rifle and a 5.56 calibre rifle equipped with a silencer.

A significant amount of ammunition was also recovered along with these weapons.

0.40 calibre pistol & ammo

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, officers of the RVIPF conducted a stop-and-check operation in the Huntum’s Ghut area.

The RVIPF said a vehicle was searched and a 0.40 calibre pistol with several .40 rounds of ammunition was discovered.

The police also found and seized several items suspected to have been stolen.

Three male suspects were arrested during this operation and remain in police custody while the investigation continues.

Officers commended

Commissioner of Police, Mr Mark Collins, commended the officers for their bravery and commitment as they strive to reduce crime and protect the communities. "These recoveries highlight the relentless commitment of our officers to ensure the safety and security of the Virgin Islands. We will continue to act on intelligence and conduct operations to remove illegal firearms from our streets."

The RVIPF urges anyone with information related to these incidents to confidentially call the Crime Stoppers line at 800-8477 (TIPS), or overseas call 1-284-800- 8477 with the relevant information, or contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 284-368- 9339.

It said any information, no matter how seemingly insufficient, could be important to solving these crimes and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

This is so normal for the now girls and dudes. A lot of young people are in a faze of time where guns, drugs and other illegal activities are like a “ positive “ vs a negative. I’m so happy those guns are off the streets and hope the DDP don’t screw this up. For each bullet should be 5 years per. The guns are automatically 10 years each. Of course you’d hear the cry of most saying them dudes are cool people. Dem don’t bother a soul etc.

The holders of these weapons are some ignorant young stupid dudes. The residents are now living in fear of they lives! Act now Mr Governor, 10yrs automatically no bulls*** about paying fines!

Mr Governor, please step inn and help our cowardly governments not just this vip unit, all in the past to are to blame and make tougher fire arms laws like, get caught with a gun that you have no.liscemce for- 10yrs Gail, no bail either, get caught with ammunitions 2yrs or a $10,000.00 fine. Its frightening to know these Tugs out on our streets with these weapons, which explains how hostile they are, always ready to treat or harm innocent citizens if they feel like it or not. Isnt the governor responsible for security he's already 'stepped in'. Stop playing politics with our safety & wellbeing.

It would be no stretch of the imagination to think what sort of weapons are in the hands of the wealthy. Do you really think some 'scooter boy' has the means to invest in importation of weapons? That is the consequence not the root cause.

Three guns gone. Good but are we truly any safer? How many came in since?

We would be safer if they were legalized for responsible trained users. Truely we can not live in a fantasy world because obviously there's so many illegal guns even homeless people can afford them now judging by the news reports.

AK-47 last week, Draco this week. What's next an RPG?
We've got to be machoistic to not call for our own self defense. We've done the same thing for years put safety in authority hands and still people get gun down in the middle of road town multiple times. How do police & politicians & governor explain that?

If they cant stop it happening over & over & over in road town... then we must be able to protect ourselves. Wake UP the house is on fire. I dont think we were emancipated to become spineless & wiped out by crime or live in fear. Far fetched but look at haiti.

the way things are, people should be armed - just in case. well now the police got those, maybe they should
test them out on their fellow government personnel. such as the premiers office, governors office, police office,
since they are rapid fire, plow the road and make the BVI safe again. Hallelujah!

So we have a set of unfit officers who can't run or will not use physical speed to catch a perpetrator. It's either they can't or wouldn't run. This is embarrassing.

Keep the stop and search going. Wonder why all these young men carrying cross body bags. What do they have in them. Makeup? For around the island and stop any and everybody and get them guns off the street

I agree that some officers are out of shape, but would you as an unarmed person run behind criminals with guns who have nothing (or everything depending on how you look at it) to lose? Be honest!

All car rental places should stop telling renters to put the keys somewhere leaving the vehicle unlocked. The rental companies should have spare keys and have the renters LOCK the vehicle, and call to tell them where the keys are hidden in the car. They can have the renter return the car back to them or they can pick it up from the renter. Things are getting so bad here, it is ridiculous!

How do you know they were not pursued? What an assumption to make. The problem is that too many people in the community readily support lawlessness and criminals except when they are personally affected. Deal with that. Your comment is not helpful at all, or maybe that was your intention.
