Police legislation need upgrading, says acting COP

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Acting Commissioner of Police David Morris will be working closely with the Attorney General’s Chambers to have some of the legislation surrounding the Territory’s “law enforcement” be upgraded.

He was at the time speaking to a group of Road Town business owners about the future goals for the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

“A lot of the legislation in the Territory around law enforcement need to be modernised in terms of DNA, taking DNA prints, photographs etc,” he told the group. “And I will be working with the Attorney General’s Office on that.”

It is evident that forensics is lacking in the Virgin Islands since many crucial pieces of evidence in high profile and gun related cases are usually sent to the United States of America or the United Kingdom to be tested.

Virgin Islands News Online was informed by a Crown Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that it takes weeks for the evidence to be returned.

In addition to that, a Drug Analyst is flown in about every six weeks to review any illegal substances that were unearthed by law enforcement officers.

Certainly, legislations need to be updated but since when this is police legislation???? The laws of the Virgin Islands need to be updated.

You are so right. All police commissioners had to work with the same problem- same legislations etc. No legislation is needed for DNA. Labs established in the BVI will be too costly especially DNA labs. If there are no crimes, there will be no need for labs and Morris, and his boys, ha, ha.

Morris full of sh.. he needs to get the UK officers to do some work from always drunk at every bar and stop spending government money sending them overseas to train when they should have been here with the skills already. Locals could have never got away with this misuse of tax payers $$$$$$

I too agree with Morris. I don't understand why (with all the crime we have these days) we don't have our own (BVIslander) forensic team? People need jobs and I see no reason why our own people can't be properly trained instead of always sending evidence to the US and UK? Surely we have the talent right here at home. Of all the hundreds of kids out of work, there must be at least a few who might be interested and suitable for training for such a job?

Before Morris go enforce the current laws on the books like the noise abatement act he on here about he need more laws??? People is this man playing us for a fool or what???? It's scary to think that we need to remind the police that it's part of their job to protect the public and enforce laws now on the books!

Yea he wants local lab for he go frame our young men and say he solving crime in the BVI so he could stay in the BVI for the next ten years...I see why none of the elected people turn up to his meetings a few weeks ago!!!

with the huge mis-trust of the RVIPF by residents under the new leadership I urge the citizens of the BVI to stand up for their rights. So-called local lab for drug tests are likely to be faulty...and target the poor and those who cannot afford legal counsel!!!
