Police destroy 8 illegal 'big bikes'
The destruction of the motorcycles or motorbikes took place at the derelict vehicle facility in Sea Cows Bay, Tortola, near to Ellis Thomas Downs.
When contacted today, Public Relations Officer of the RVIPF Diane Drayton said, "Yes, we crushed eight motorcycles which are by law prohibited from being driven in the Territory."
This news site was on the scene following the destruction of the motorcycles and saw what remained following the crushing of the illegal bikes, which can best be described as superbikes, of between 600cc and 1000cc.
By law, bikes in excess of 125cc are prohibited from being operated in the territory due to their excessive capacity for speed and the extremely loud noise they make.
However, there continues to be groups of young men who gather on Sundays and ride around Tortola with seemingly little care for the police.
Fatalities/injuries from bikes
Over the years there have been a number of fatalities not only on large capacity bikes but also smaller scooters.
21 year old Malik J. Aaron of Havers died following a horrible motorcycle accident on the night of January 19, 2014 at Beef Island.
Aaron’s death came as a shock to the community and followed closely on the heels of the death of another youth, 17-year-old Jovahn A. Chapman, who also died in a motorcycle accident approximately two weeks earlier.
On April 9, 2014, a man whose name was given as Everett Isaac also known as 'Peewee' suffered a badly crushed leg and other injuries following a motorcycle accident.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the injured man was riding a motorcycle and collided with a motor vehicle.
Nevin Brathwaite of Hodges Creek had to be flown overseas for medical attention following his involvement in an accident on July 24, 2014. Brathwaite, while riding a scooter, collided with a truck close to his Hodge's Creek home.
Speaking at a public forum, lecturer at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru had suggested that a total ban on motorcycles might not be the way to go. He suggested raising the age of persons allowed to ride scooters as an alternative.
“If they’re not responsible, it doesn’t matter if you ban scooters or not, they will find some other way of injuring or hurting themselves,” he had stated. A person must be at least 16 years of age to obtain a motorcycle licence.
