ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information coming out of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is that following evaluation at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital, officers have charged two men for incidents that were originally believed to be mental health-related.

Police said Glenford Smith Jr., a native of Tortola residing in Carrot Bay was charged with the destruction of windows and windscreens of 19 vehicles in the parking lot of the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

The Force said that only 19 of the 26 vehicles seen with damage made police reports over the destruction.

Smith Jr is to appear in court at the next available sitting.

Vincy facing charges

Police also added that David Corridon, 43, a native of St Vincent was charged with indecently assaulting a Long Bush female resident. The victim reported that a man entered her home and tried to force himself on her. Persons in the area responded to her cries for help.

According to information, Corridon appeared before Magistrate’s Court and was placed on remand.

Police said the law prohibits charges to be brought against any person confirmed to be mentally ill. However, if the offender is mentally sound and aware of the offense carried out, charges can be laid on that individual.

The Force last week reported a rise in incidents involving the mentally ill in the Territory, following a number of suspected incidents.

The system failed the young man who smashed the cars. His mother reached out for help for him from the hospital as well as others in high authority with no response long before this incident. No one cares about mental health in this territory. It is a real problem and needs to be addressed. The ejected members are busy with all sorts of trivialities and this section of the community is neglected.
He most likely did not have to come to this, had he received assistance.

Both men is not suffering from any type of mental illnesses. That was just a spiteful act because they were just having a bad day. They need to be punish for what they did. Yes, we do have a mental health issue but some is playing the game.
