PM Drew reintroduces Associate Degree in nursing to strengthen healthcare workforce
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts & Nevis- Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew announced the reintroduction of the Associate degree in Nursing at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC). This announcement was made on International Nurses Day, May 12, 2025. This qualification is to be undertaken following a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
It is part of a strategic effort to create multiple pathways for entry into the nursing profession. Additionally, this was done to reiterate the government’s resolve to enhance the healthcare sector by education, investment, and strategic workforce planning.
Furthermore, this programme is aligns with the framework of the government’s wider objectives as outlined in the Sustainable Island State Agenda. This initiative gives top priority to the progress in healthcare as well as the safeguarding and development of citizen’s skills.
In addition, the International Nurses Day was also celebrated with the theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.” PM Terrance Drew pointed out that the theme reminds them that the health of the nurses impacts national health and the economy’s strength.
Posting on his official Facebook page, PM Drew said that introducing the Nursing Associate Degree at CFBC is an important step in health and education. It shows their commitment to build opportunities, careers, and an enhanced healthcare system.
Introduction of National Research Initiative
In addition to this, the St Kitts and Nevis government also initiated a national research program. It focuses on enhancing the healthcare and education system of the twin-island country.
The Office of the Principal Nursing Officer has initiated a research study entitled – A Descriptive Analysis of the National Nurses Workforce in St Kitts and Nevis.
This study will assist the government in making policies based on facts and supporting its decisions with facts. It will also assist the government in aligning its investments to health and economy.
Besides, he also urged young people, particularly young men to pursue the career of nursing. These efforts point to a new milestone in the development of healthcare education and workforce development in St Kitts and Nevis.
