ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - It is against the law in the Virgin Islands for a man to have carnal knowledge with a young lady who is under the consent age of 16, but they still do it anyway.

According to statistics from the Social Development Department (SDD), from 2009 to 2011, there were 41 reported cases of males having sexual relations with girls under the consent age.

Of those 41 cases, 39 were in relation to female victims, with 32 male predators. It was also revealed that in some of the cases, more than one female victim was involved.

The issue of older men being involved with young girls in the Territory is more than just a statistical record but runs deep into a social issue that is cause for concern with many of the community going as far as blaming parents while others are holding the men accountable.

Speaking to several members of the community, most of them shared the same sentiment, that men who are found to be involved with under aged girls should be harshly penalised but some parents, mainly mothers, are to be blamed for how their daughters dress in public and for allowing them to date and be intimate with older men for rewards of which they reap the profits.

Randomly speaking to persons in Road Town, Alicia Cameroon said that she is disgusted by the fact that men engage in sexual acts with young teenage girls. She told Virgin Islands News Online that among many things that she hates, that is in the top five for her.

“Leave the little girls, let them grow up, leave them alone,” expressed Ms. Cameroon.

She said it is a “heart breaker” to see young girls allowing older men to have their way but added that “they can only do as they were taught”.

Ms. Cameroon told this news site that she is aware of some mothers who encourage their daughters to be involved with older men for money and other earthly objects so that the mothers can then reap the rewards.

Alicia Frett also agreed that one reason why parents encourage their daughters to be involved with older men is for the men to purchase expensive gifts. “They encourage their daughters because they get a cut of the earnings.”

She added that it is very wrong and a law should be in place specifically to penalise parents.

“Parents should find out what their daughters are up to and set rules and regulations for them. When they see their daughters with things they never bought, they should investigate, not the other way around.”

Marlon Adams said even though it is bad and inhumane, it gets worst. He charged that this is a lifetime where mothers are now ‘pimpin’ their daughters by exploiting them to men with money.

He said that some mothers tell themselves that because they have a beautiful daughter they can advertise her to men of stature.

Mr. Adams, who has one daughter, added that other than parents encouraging their daughters to be involved with older men, the younger women in the Virgin Islands have the men fooled. He said that majority of the time they are the ones “going after the men, dressed up in sexy clothing and make-up, transforming them from their teens to toys.”

“Girls nowadays figured out that men are wired and they go after what they like to see, so they display all their assets, inviting us over, but only the heartless and perverted men go,” he opined.

Adams told this news site that out of experience, he and a lady were flirting and “after couple days we liked each other a lot, until after I asked her age and I realise she was way younger than me, I backed off.”

He said the decision he made, another guy may have done the opposite.

A mother who wished to remain anonymous, told this news site that she loves her daughter to death, and would never do anything to hurt her daughter.

She said that the older men target the younger girls because “they are easy, they are not looking for love, they just want the older men to pick them up and drop them places and buy them material stuff.”

She charged that some of the girls go out looking for “it”. “It’s still shameful for the guys to know that they are older, and that this girl is a minor but still continue relations and the parents encourage the behavior because they get a whole lot from the relationship.”

According to Alcedo Lettesome, men who are interfering with young girls, when or if they get a daughter, they would protect their daughters to the “max” to ensure that the same thing doesn’t happen to her.

He said that even though some of the girls call it on themselves, there is still no legitimate reason for a man to interfere with the young girls.

“When a guy does that, he is interfering with the future, if we rob the future now, what will happen later on, so much is happening, such as men with men and women with women, plus this, what’s next?”

He said the men are supposed to be looking out for the younger girls and not trying to use them.

“We are big men, we are here to look out for them and make sure that they are doing the right things and making the right decisions in life. Every child of the federation is everyone’s child.”

President of Women of Power and High Potential (WOPAHP), Carima Wilson said that mothers who pimp out their daughters are inhumane and are leading their children up the wrong road.

“If parents or families are benefiting from this act, it is child labour and will drive their daughters up the road of prostitution.”

She stated that WAOPAHP tries to prevent this from happening by teaching young ladies values of a true and long lasting relationship and what should be offered by both parties.

The case of mothers pimping daughters is nothing new around the world where criminal charges are brought against mothers who have pimped their under age daughters. In Nebraska in the United States of America, Police have reported that cases of mothers pimping daughters have grown. In March 2012, a 35-year-old was charged for allegedly allowing at least seven men to have sex with her teenage daughter at least 20 times. Investigators say at least three men had sex with her 7-year-old daughter.

In Florida in March 2012, as well, a mother was jailed for pimping her six year old daughter.

How prevalent does mothers in the VI pimp their daughters? I don't think this pimp thing happens here in the VI to an alarming rate or anywhere close. Places like DR is where pimping in this manner happen because of hard times many spanish household faces. Now Esp around carnival time which we are on the heels of many of the mothers allow their daughters to dress skimpy and the older man dem just a shark dem hard.

BVI culture, morals, way of lifestyle.......etc have changed and is changing at warp street. We are mimicking what occur in London, New York, Miami, Charlotte Amalie, Lost Angeles, Atlanta......etc. Whatever is happening good or bad or ugly in these metropolitan cities is readily at our finger tips. To live the lifestyles we see on TV, some of our young citizens both boys and girls have engaged in immoral, destructive, and bad behavior. Materialism trumps almost everything else. We want the designer clothes, latest electronic gadgets, expensive cars, huge mansions...etc. Nothing wrong with acquiring these things; it is how we go about and what we are willing to do get these things is the problem. Regrettably, some men use the desire for material things to prey on some young girls and boys who are willingly to use bodies to get the things that they want or need. Are some mothers encouraging this abuse of their young daughters or sons. Another group of young women that are being abused is young immigrant women. Many of these young women have to use their bodies to make ends meet. The BVI is in a rapid declining moral spiral. It need to check itself and stop this spiral. And if it does not the future is bleak.

Yes, we must protect our under age girls, raise them to believe themselves. Our Caribbean culture has a bad habit of talking down to each other especially our children. Everything is "ya worthless or ya stupid". THIS MUST STOP! Teach your daughters to keep their legs closed and their minds open. Also I don't care if my daughter is 21, I don't want to see her with no 54 year dirty old man either. What the hell would they have in common. I consider him a trick or John also.

Mother Hen you are so right! I call Tortola my home but I hail from a different country and culture where my parents instilled in me the desire to educate myself and to be able to provide for myself. I was taught a man and a woman are equals and a relationship is built on two likeminded individuals striving for the same goals in life. It breaks my heart to see the young teenage girls not having any aspirations to further their education and choosing to have babies with little boys who have no jobs and have no desire to settle down and be a husband and father. I have friends with teenage daughters that allow them to dress skantily and hang out with older men, saying they trust the girl and the man. It's all wrong! These girls should be using their own skills and their own minds to get the education and career or to open their own business. Instead they choose to act sexy and ask men to provide them with the money or material items they want. What happens when their looks go sour? What happens when the man doesn't want to provide for them anymore? What have they got to live a decent life on their own? Mothers, please be positive with your daughters and teach them that sexy is smart and independent women. Love is when your man buys you a gift because he wants to and that you never had to ask for. Babies deserve a family unit that has a father in the home. Teach your daughters to be a lady not a playtoy for a man.

I do not believe that this is occurring in the Virgin Islands at an alarming pace or even close to it spin the wheel. I'm not trying to belittle the DR community, but it is true.

However, the discussion surrounding screen time is not limited to children alone. Parents struggle with their own electronic distractions. When asked if they spend too much, too little, or just the right amount of time on their smartphone, dinosaur game more than half of all parents (56%) say they spend too much time on their device, while nearly seven-in-ten (68%) say they are at least occasionally distracted by their phone when spending time with their children.

Some parents allow their daughters to be involved with older men in order to gain the rewards. This is a controversial decision, but it is something that some parents feel is necessary for their daughters. Some believe that this type of relationship will help the daughter develop a stronger sexual identity and will help her develop a more positive relationship with men.
