WICKHAM’S CAY I, Tortola, VI- As part of ongoing efforts to enhance security measures and improve the visitor experience at Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park (CBRTPP), the Park is seeking to implement a taxi, transportation and dispatching service.

Once implemented, only drivers who are registered with the service will be eligible to operate when cruise ships are in.

This was revealed in a Request for Proposal sent out by Tortola Pier Park Limited (TPPL) today, Friday, August 4, 2023.

“Tortola Pier Park Ltd. (TPPL) is requesting proposals for the provision of taxi, transportation and dispatching service at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park (CBRTPP). TPPL invites tenders from suitably qualified Companies as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security measures and improve visitor experience.”

‘System of choice for implementation’

TPPL added that the “Semi-Closed system” has been identified as the system of choice for implementation.

“It is an operational procedure whereby the number of taxi/tour operators is not limited,” TPPL stated.

Among the items that must be furnished with the Proposals is a list of a minimum of 75 drivers who will be attached to the service or company.

TPPL said the “list of drivers will be eligible to operate only as part of the Company when a ship is at Berth.”

This should have been a Port Issue, but Port can't get it handle, Port and their weak leadetship is a total failure. Now the strong leadership of Pier Park is force to take the bull by the horn and do something.. Port in need of good leadership. Maybe the Minister should juzt hand over the daily management of all Ports to Pier Park management.

Ever since the VIP was elected in 2019, Vance has basically been a figurehead. Everybody knows Hon. Rhymer's mother-in-law is the one really running the show over there.

As it is now its so disorganized. So many taxi drivers, are unhappy, complaining and fussing about how it is now. So, this is the results, people who cannot police themselves, work together and follow simple rules. Now force someone to Police them and force rules upon them.(Why Britain will soon take over)...Lets hope this new system works. Can't get any worse..

Who is evaluating the ports and their workers? Taxi drivers are always getting the worse end of the stick while they are the first and last person the tourist interact with. They go through the most stress emotionally and physically. The system have some kinks and the ports know exactly where the kinks are and who are causing the kinks and issue but are afraid to touch the issue because of who are really causing these issues so they trying to do it in a way to shift the real problem off of them. You all are weak. election finish now so the pressure is about to hot the roof. Stop selling the taxi drivers short. Yes control is necessary but you continue to run from the real issues facing them.

All of you know who are conning the system and port and their security system are allowing the system to be like how it is. Ports weak stop shifting from your problem you cause a lot of these problems.

Evaluate port and the pier park then let the taxi drivers find common ground. You are to heavy handed on drivers.

I am an independent operator at the Pier, and I have been in the taxi business for over forty years. From what I have seen on the new system that they say is going to be in place shortly because of security reasons.Oh please, everyone can join, however they only need 75 members. Independent taxi drivers we need to let our voices heard. We need to speak with all the Government Departments who are in charge of Tourism. Now,don’t you think that they already have a company that already has 75 membership.Think about it.

For we independent taxi operators who make a poverty like living from working there I am going to say honestly what I see is going on at the Pier.Through the years I observed things that make me wonder where are the personnel’s who supposed to run the taxi operations. For years I see drivers driving for a shore agent and in the independent line a driver will work for that driver, and I can see all drivers loading at the same time, don’t talk about Father driving son and vise versa, drivers have a permanent job and have people working for them, drivers who live abroad can still have people to go inside and drive for them.Don’t talk about me seeing a lot of independent drivers going in each ship day and I who drive a 14 passengers van have to wait for every three ship days before I can get a job.Now not so long ago the shore agents were supposed to only book the tours but now they include the beach trips that we the independent drivers was supposed to make a living from.Guys look at this the shore agents vicheles are going twice a ship day.All the independent drivers are doing is complaining to each other who can’t change this outright lack of equality transparency the rights of we the independent drivers.

Who idiot put this rfp out. there is no one company in the entire BVI with 75 drivers, so with all the taximan, this is the best they can come up with, and freeze them out. Interesting that this got even this far. 75 drivers means about 75 or there abouts vehicles.
