Pickup truck flips after brake fail on Windy Hill

CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- Two persons were lucky to escape injuries after the vehicle they were in suffered a brake fail while descending Windy Hill in the Great Carrot Bay area this afternoon, June 16, 2026.

According to reports reaching our News Centre, a pickup truck was proceeding into Carrot Bay via Windy Hill around 5:00 PM when it encountered braking issues, forcing the driver to steer the vehicle into the hillside in the area of Bannakeet Restaurant.

The maneuver resulted in the vehicle toppling.

The driver of the pickup truck and another occupant managed to escape the mishap unharmed.

The lone-vehicle accident caused a major backup of traffic.

Police were spotted on the scene conducting investigations and they also prevented any vehicle from getting past the area of the accident due to "safety reasons".

      Thank you for this. As the passenger, we truly were blessed as to the outcome. The driver and I would like to thank all of the first responders and importantly the good samaritans who came to our aide immediately to help us safely exit the truck. Thank you, Nurse Melanie, for checking on us.

    Thanks to Bananakeet staff who came out and help to direct traffic and throws dirt on the oil in the road to stop all the vehicles from skidding. I really appreciate that because if they wasn’t direct in traffic, I would not get home on time.

    People take note. Incase you run out of brakes, pull up your handbrakes immediately and downshift to the lowest gear. This action should allow you to bring the vehicle to a control speed where you can handle it safely, or exit without minimum risk of being hurt.

      Hopefully no one else followed this as yet......if you pull the hand breaks up immediately that can cause the vehicle to flip.....you have to rise the handbrakes gradually....for vehicles where the emergency breaks is a button the vehicle has sensors to apply the breaks accordingly.

      You should however shift down to the lowest gear...in semi-automatic vehicles change to manual and shift down to gear 1 - as stated in the comment above......

      But do know yank the hand break up if your decending at an excessive speed...
