PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- The second cohort of medical students at the Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) BVI received their white coats, taking their Hippocratic Oath during a White Coat Ceremony on Friday, July 24, 2026.

“This is a milestone in your career…it's the beginning of you becoming doctors. So wear this white coat with pride,” President of PHSU Dr Gino Natalicchio said.

He encouraged the new medical students to attend all their classes, complete all tests and ensure they make time to enjoy the island as well.

“But most and foremost, make sure you become good doctors, empathetic, and with a good heart.”

Another proud milestone- Premier Wheatley

Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said the recognition of the second cohort of students represents “another proud milestone in the story we are writing together”.

Dr Wheatley said the results of this partnership are not only being met but are being surpassed, with over 90 per cent of students being foreign students. According to him, 30 new students are expected in Janaury 2027, and projections are that 80 to 100 new students are expected in July 2027.

“Students are consistently reporting that the BVI offers the ideal environment for studies. Faculty describe the territory as a place where they can grow professionally while contributing meaningfully to our community. This is exactly the kind of synergy we envisioned, where education strengthens the community, and the community strengthens education.”

Each year, PHSU BVI offers two full scholarships to Virgin Islanders. The class of 2029 includes Virgin Islanders Tanya Christopher and Olivia Jarrett.
